Roca Salon & Spa’s roots draw upon more than 35 years of styling history, adventure, and love. It began with Vidal Sassoon–trained hairstylist Rod Cavner running a small Main Street salon named Blondie’s, where he was joined by his soon-to-be wife, and fellow Vidal Sassoon–trained hairstylist, Rhonda. After marrying and moving to Hawaii for four years, the duo returned with innovative new services, design concepts, and island-themed nicknames for friends. The result was Rhonda's three-year makeover of the space, which now includes eco-friendly, energy-efficient lighting and appliances as well as eye-catching decor.
The couple's time spent island hopping is evident in the pedicure room, where bamboo reaches up toward a sparkling chandelier that shines upon backlit purple-and-pink glass basins, in which toes bask in hot stones and Hawaiian mud. Stacey Soble of Salon Today interviewed Rhonda when the salon was named the third runner-up in the magazine's Salon of the Year design competition. Cavner said, "The bonus wow factor is the entire styling area floor has embedded phosphorescent chips which cause the floor to glow in the dark when the lights suddenly go off!”
But the decor isn't the only thing that earned the company recognition as one of KC Magazine’s best Kansas City salons in 2012. The talented team includes hair colorists who have trained in London, Paris, and Beverly Hills, as well as skilled aestheticians, massage therapists, and nail technicians. The color experts work their magic in an elegant, modern area with see-through chairs, potted white orchids, and long strings of crystal beads that divide the space and give visiting Spider-Men an easy way to reach the ceiling.
Imagine someone approaches with a smoothie made of organic peaches, blueberries, or mangoes, but instead of offering you a taste they gently spread its contents across your forehead and massage the sweet aromas into your skin. This surreal daydream happens daily at Pure Elegance Spa, where aestheticians devoted to organic skincare nourish complexions with their six signature fruit-smoothie facials and other treatments designed to nurse skin to optimal health. Oxygen therapy revives dull skin in tandem with parsley and cucumber, and microdermabrasion promotes cellular turnover deep within the dermis using an exfoliant of pears and poppy seeds. Beyond edible ingredients, many services also blend in products by Éminence Organic Skin Care—a Hungarian line that heals signs of aging and ushers toxins from the face and body without relying on chemicals or additives.
Those who prefer to save their appetite for later can skip the chocolate and margarita manicures in favor of airbrush makeup or waxing services that clear away fuzz on the face and body. Ocular enhancements include Xtreme Lashes eyelash extensions that add natural-looking drama, as well as an eye rescue treatment that aims to save peepers from puffiness, crow's feet, and madcap pokes from nearby Stooges.
Owner and stylist Courtney Hunt enjoys the sound of her clients’ voices. That’s because she likes to involve her clients in their transformations by offering a consultation with each visit and welcoming feedback during services. Visitors can opt for a wet or dry haircut and repair damaged strands with an Awapuhi Wild Ginger Keratin Treatment. Courtney can treat frizzy hair with keratin-smoothing treatments or whisk away unwanted strands with facial waxing, which leaves skin as smooth as Tom Cruise’s glass eye. For home haircare, she provides information and sometimes discounts on products, such as Paul Mitchell's Awapuhi Wild Ginger Luxury.
Sunny Daze Tanning and Salon's lineup of spray-tan technology and UV-tanning equipment—including beds, standup booths, and leg tanners—keeps skin beaming with a summery, straight-off-the-beach appearance. With tanning packages available by the session, month, or year, the facility helps clients maintain bronzed tones no matter the season. To sustain the health of epidermal surfaces, customers can stop spoon-feeding pureed carrots to each pore and instead load up on an arsenal of brand-name lotions, tonics, and bronzers available for purchase. Tanning aside, the salon's aestheticians sap stress during manicures, facials, and a variety of massages, including soft-tissue treatments and magnet therapy.
With a complimentary glass of wine in hand, Innovations Salon & Spa’s guests settle in to enjoy one of the many beautifying services that salon owner Donna has perfected over 14 years in business and two decades in the industry. Donna and her staff of 15 talented professionals specialize in hairstyling services that range from traditional cuts and coloring to innovative keratin straightening treatments that eliminate frizz and tame unmanageable curls. They wield L'oreal products; the infusions of antioxidants, macadamia-nut oil, and wheat protein in these professional formulas fortify each strand with enough strength to bench-press a bobby pin.
The scents of peppermint, lavender, chamomile, and eucalyptus fill the air in the spa, where therapists soothe muscles and senses alike during aromatherapy massages. Nearby, aestheticians exfoliate and refresh aging complexions with Bioelements products, remove unwanted hair with swipes of warm wax, and apply makeup to the faces of aspiring prom queens and identity thieves.
Laser Lipo & Vein Center's vein specialist and phlebologist, the board-certified Dr. Thomas Wright, has marked nearly every step of his career with an award. As a student at the University of Missouri's School of Medicine, his leadership and academic performance in the top quarter of his class got him elected to the venerable Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society. After graduation, his voracious appetite for knowledge earned him a Physician Recognition Award from the American Medical Association, which recognizes doctors who average at least 50 credits of educational activities and swallow one textbook like a vitamin each year. Dr. Wright has also studied tumescent liposuction under the tutelage of its inventor, Dr. Jeffrey Klein. He also contributes original research to the American College of Phlebology, teaches classes at the American Society of Nonsurgical Aesthetics, and invests heavily in his patients. Impressed by his compassion and decade of expertise with cosmetic procedures, they honored him with Patients' Choice Awards in 2010 and 2011.
The center reflects his primary interests in vein disease and liposuction that only requires local anesthesia. Vein therapies are determined by an ultrasound evaluation, which could lead to a noninvasive treatment that heals with radio waves and the sterile affection of a grandmother robot. Lasers round out the practice's aesthetic side, as they can assist in liposuction and provide a gentle alternative to cosmetic injections. In addition to routing hair from the skin's surface, they penetrate below it to rejuvenate aging skin and zap veins.
