Certain hairstyles look good on certain facial shapes. When a client asks for a haircut you know will be a mismatch for them, how do you handle it?
I suggest a different style that is suitable.
Fashionable hairstyles are constantly changing. How do you keep up-to-date on popular trends?
I go to hair shows, take classes, and watch YouTube.
What's the biggest mistake you see clients make when they style their hair at home?
They use too much heat.
At Spoiled Rotten Kids Spa, the pampering treatments have a kid-friendly twist—the chocolate facial, for example, nourishes skin with a mix of chocolate, honey, and cottage cheese that's actually edible. Fun nail art, meanwhile, enhance the manicures and pedicures, and nonalcoholic mocktails, such as the cherry-juice cosmo, add a grown-up feel to the fun.
The spa, which has been featured on Tyra Banks, complements its à la carte spa treatments with styling for natural hair. The team braids locks into cornrows, crafts two-stranded twists, and administers press-and-curls. Chaperoned kids can also celebrate with party packages, complete with a tiara for the birthday girl instead of the traditional spa robe with candles stuck in it.
The skilled massage therapists at Sole Zones Reflexology & Massage deploy their healing hands across backs, limbs, and feet, easing aches and pains amid their tranquil, spa-like facility or bringing their soothing services to clients’ doorsteps. Their therapeutic massages utilize customized Swedish, deep-tissue, and chair modalities, each of which focuses on improving circulation while unknotting French-braided muscles. Built on the belief that reflex points in the hands and feet are connected to the body’s system of organs, Sole Zone's reflexologists are able to further encourage physiques to relax, rebalance, and self-heal by stimulating specific nerve endings during 30- to 60-minute reflexology sessions.
Dr. Debra A. Coats-Walton—a native Washingtonian, a Georgetown University–trained physician, and a board-certified dermatologist with a tsunami of credentials—balances the candlelit serenity of a spa with medical-grade beautifying techniques. Addressing a wide spectrum of cosmetic issues, the good doctor puts her hours spent studying aesthetic laser technology, liposuction, and dermal fillers to practice, and she has designed a signature line of physician-grade skincare products.
Smartlipo surgeries contour silhouettes by liquefying fat deposits with controlled pulses of laser light energy, an improvement over traditional, less-effective lipo that uses a witch doctor to chant fat away. On the other end of the spectrum, a number of FDA-approved injectable treatments add volume to cheekbones and smooth away fine lines.
Because she splits her time as an attending physician at Washington Hospital Center, she put together a team of health-care professionals and technicians to man Cutera and Fraxel laser systems. The laser treatments can zap away rogue hairs, firm skin tone, or diminish the appearance of blemishes, sun damage, and semipermanent clown makeup. Additionally, the staff mollycoddles frazzled bodies with traditional spa services, including custom facials and massages with warm essential oils.
After more than 25 years spent promoting and practicing wellness, Jandel Benjamin can untie nearly any knot a muscle can get itself into. The nutritionist and massage therapist draws on a wealth of knowledge to relieve pain and improve circulation during Swedish and deep-tissue massages. Benjamin’s talents stretch far beyond these traditional modalities, encompassing specialty techniques such as lymphatic drainage, reflexology, and hot-stone therapy. There’s even a modality tailored specifically to expectant mothers. This pregnancy massage combines strokes and kneads to relieve back pain and tap out lullabies in Morse code.
Led by senior stylist and owner Liz Sarvinas, the expert team at Hair by Ell gives hair a fresh start with Paul Mitchell, It's a 10, and Joico products during haircuts and deep conditionings. After a stylist seats a client before his or her own personal, triangular haircutting station, the two work together to pick a fitting style, working through options such as ombre coloring, asymmetrical bangs, or a perfect cowlick. Once hair is shed of split ends and extra weight, clients can choose to add body with extensions or depth with highlights or a perm.
