The Stockton Indoor Sports Complex celebrates fast-paced sports and recreation with public-skate sessions, roller hockey, and roller-derby contests. During public-skate sessions, adults and kids lace up old-fashioned quads or in-line skates and glide around the center's hockey-rink-sized floor. Add a couple goals to the floor, and it's ready for youth- and adult-hockey leagues or indoor-soccer matches?the complex's only skate-free activity aside from bathroom breaks and oft-discouraged handstands. For those who prefer to spectate, the Port City Roller Girls zip around the track on select days, shouldering opposing teams into the boards as they entertain fans during grueling roller-derby matches. On special occasions, the rink's private party rooms are available for birthday parties replete with pizza, hot dogs, and soliloquies lamenting the fleeting nature of one's youth.

It's quite possible that many of the parents who bring their kids to RollerLand Skate Center spent their own childhoods at the rink. The Trevena family has run RollerLand for more than 30 years, long before America elected its first roller-skating president. In that time, the entertainment center has hosted countless parties, charity fundraisers, and regular skate sessions. Today, RollerLand carries its past into the present. DJs play Top 40 hits as skaters roll across the 12,000 sq. ft. skating floor during open skates or Teen Nights on Fridays. Away from the rink, guests can find staple amenities, such as a concession stand that serves nachos and corndogs, arcade games that spew out redemption tickets, and colorful tubes that snake throughout a three-story play structure. One thing stands out, however¬—a large vault door that looks like something out of a heist movie. Inside waits the Laser Maze, an ever-changing game that challenges its participants to stretch and bend around bright green beams of light.

Open for over 38 years, Paradise Skate Roller Rink invites skaters to roll around its Hawaiian-themed decorations. Brightly colored palm trees adorn the painted walls, adding ambiance as skaters don rental quad or inline skates. A snack bar offers beer, wine, and sodas alongside hot dogs, personal pizzas, nachos, and burritos, which patrons can dine on as they watch one of several flat-screen televisions or events such as roller derby.

Palm trees aren't normally present when Kristi Yamaguchi turns a triple axel. But that's par for the course at Downtown Ice, where the former Olympic skater has been known to circle the rink in celebration of a chilly San Jose tradition. Each year, Christmas lights wrap around the tree trunks in downtown San Jose’s Circle of Palms, lighting up the ice rink that spreads beneath the trees' fronds. Designed by rink architect Gil Garcia, the outdoor ice arena enables revelers to partake in a beloved winter tradition without being forced to partner skate with yetis. At night, the palms’ twinkling lights join stadium lighting so that skaters can practice their Scott Hamilton backflips all night long. The temporary ice rink is part of San Jose’s Downtown for the Holidays traditions, such as Christmas in the Park and the Winter Wonderland amusement rides.

Operated by Silicon Valley Sports & Entertainment, the parent company of the NHL's San Jose Sharks, Sharks Ice skating centers professionally maintain solid-water rinks and facilities to accommodate a full range of activities. Each Friday night (7:30–9:30 p.m. in San Jose; 7:15–9:15 p.m. in Oakland) customers have full run of the centers' Olympic-sized rinks for public skating and fashionable displays of warm, Cosby-inspired outerwear. In addition to skating amenities, each Sharks Ice center features a full-service pro shop that sells NHL athletic apparel and other skate supplies and accessories. The centers also feature public snack bars and spacious public areas for socializing and frigid recitations of 18th-century Russian poetry. Sharks Ice San Jose also houses Stanley's Sports Bar, a full bar and restaurant overlooking the three rinks. Skate rental is included, but if you prefer to bring your own foot-blades, the general admission price without today's Groupon is $8, which still makes the Groupon the better deal. Hours are subject to change, so please call ahead to confirm.
