When Marion “Spitz” Eipperle decided in 1971 that he wanted to open a golf course on his family’s land, his fellow farmers thought he had come unhinged. But that didn’t stop him. He shrugged off the snickers of his detractors and recruited the help of friend and mentor Harley Hodges. Together, they cut down a plot of corn stalks and evicted every last scarecrow to make way for Harley’s design: an 18-hole course that would careen through the farmland and tangle with local creeks on both the front and back sides. Eipperle’s dream finally became a reality when Green Meadows Golf Course opened for play on Memorial Day weekend in 1973.

Today, Spitz remains the course patriarch, handling its affairs alongside his children and grandchildren. Just as it did that fateful day in ’73, the terrain gives players a tour of the Eipperle acreage, hopping over the first creek at six points on the front side and over the second creek four times on the back side. One of these holes, the par 5 fifth, is the course’s signature undertaking, known for a tee shot that must fly 220 yards to clear the creek, a second shot that must be steered right around a late-fairway dogleg, and a third shot that must give the grass a secret knock before being allowed to settle on the green.

Course at a Glance: * 18-hole, par 70 course * Total length of 6,391 yards from the back tees * Course rating of 66.8 from the back tees * Course slope of 116 from the back tees * Three sets of tees per hole * Scorecard

Skaters of all ages and arabesque abilities soar across Monroe Multi-Sports Complex's vast rink—the former home to 2011 NHL recruit Matt Mahalak. Though the rink acts as the complex’s nucleus of activity—hosting hockey games, figure skating exhibitions, skating lessons, and public skate sessions—, an adjacent field house promotes more land-based sports, including youth and adult soccer, dodge ball, and flag football. Additionally, a collection of springy inflatables allows young visitors to bounce for up to a full day or until they finally convince gravity to permanently reverse.

Passionate staffers stay on hand to offer skating tips during public sessions, assist guests as they sign for one of the soccer leagues, or be of assistance in case of a hot-chocolate overdose. In keeping with their commitment to physical education, the complex’s team of instructors also coach home-schooled children for credits, as well as give birthday children the gift of adrenaline-pumping exercise during party packages.

Since its founding in 1954, the Monroe Family YMCA has sought to foster healthy minds, bodies, and spirits through pristine facilities, dedicated staff, and enriching programs. Parents can leave tykes in the capable hands of a childcare professional as they master racquetball backhands or take steps on the path to fitness under the guidance of a personal trainer. A fleet of strength training and cardio equipment sculpts muscles and burns calories, and dry saunas and hydromassages bring heart rates down to a relaxed, healthy rhythm. When school is out, kids can commandeer the facilities in before- and after-school-care programs and exciting summer day camps, and parties amid inflatable pirate ships and swimming pools let children celebrate milestone birthdays or joyful teddy-bear marriages.
