The trainers at CrossFit 1809 prescribe only the medicine that they themselves take—CrossFit. "Our head coach Seneca lost 100 pounds and changed his life," says the owner. Now Seneca and team share that success with new students from all walks of life. They draw from weight-lifting, gymnastics, plyometrics, and other schools of movement to help clients sculpt their bodies.

Their workouts are designed to increase patrons' functional fitness, meaning that they'll perform squats to help tackle flights of stairs or heave bags of sand to help heave bags of sand. And no two workouts are alike in an effort to keep participants engaged, while also working different groups of muscles. The gym can be an intimidating place for unexperienced exercisers, which is why Better Bodies introduced its Healthy Start training program. During the initial session, the staff uses a computer program called the Virtual Fitness Planner to reveal basic biometrics and calculate the likelihood of health risks such as type-2 diabetes. Once you're informed, you can take action by signing up for a personal-training session, attending a group-fitness class, or lifting on the fitness floor's Hammer Strength machines.
