Renée Rudikh’s pursuit of beauty began in her native country of Ukraine, where she trained with dermatologists and plastic surgeons before moving to the United States to attend the Christine Valmy International School of Cosmetology. She spent 10 years working at such skincare companies as Helena Rubinstein, Mario Badescu, and Georgette Klinger. Now at her own company, Renée Rudikh Advanced Skin Care, she corrects and maintains skin with services that lift, exfoliate, and cleanse. Like a car that can also transform into a boat or a stylish blazer, Renée's treatments adapt to the circumstances: the teens' deep pore-cleansing facial takes emerging hormones into account, and the gentlemen’s facial considers the skin differences that accompany carrying a Y chromosome.
Sahana Spa's India-themed spaces mix modern amenities with the beauty of ancient Eastern wisdom. Handmade Indian artifacts, Sundãri skincare products, and several chocolaty colors welcome clients to the spa. Staff members then lead guests to treatment suites that are equipped with iPod-docking stations, individual temperature controls, and absolutely no bears. This is the perfect setting for them to knead away stress with indulgent bamboo and hot-stone massages or administer a Sahana-Vedic facial. Over in the nail lounge, technicians pretty up nails with various mani-pedis.
Many twins grow up sharing similar interests: they might listen to the same music, favor the same foods, or blink at exactly the same time. Jamie and Jenn love to cut and style hair. In high school, they trained together under the Paul Mitchell curriculum, and then launched their careers immediately after graduation—testing their skills in the salons of Los Angeles and New York. Today, they still work together as the notoriously lively co-owners of Moxie Salon. Both are certified in LaBella hair-and-eyelash extensions. Jenn is a Wella-certified colorist, and Jamie is a recognized Motives makeup foundation specialist. Together, they lead a team of experienced stylists and colorists.
At both their original Ridgewood and new Montclair locations, stylists trim hair with custom cuts and transform heads into sassy sculptures with Marilyn Monroe–style curlers or Statue of Liberty–style bronze crowns. For many of these services, they use the salon's house brand of moisturizing-and-conditioning haircare products. But Moxie Salon's aestheticians don't limit their services to hair: they also bronze clients' skin with organic airbrush tanning and perform custom makeup applications using Motives products. They even helm new specialty locations that deal exclusively with extensions, bridal updos, or men's aesthetics.
Keep calm and drink coffee, eat chocolate, or eat a cupcake. These wise words, originally uttered by Aristotle, are colorfully displayed on the vibrant red walls of Salon Crimson, a chic salon boutique helmed by veteran stylists and longtime friends Diana and Krista. After more than a decade in the hair industry, the duo decided to join forces and open a full-service salon together. They, along with a talented staff, help frazzled follicles unwind with keratin treatments and pamper hands and feet so they can make a stunning entrance back into the real world covered with miniature coats of armor made out of gel and shellac polish.
The salon’s decor mixes and matches a variety of styles to create an eye-appealing space filled with zebra-print chairs, blue mosaic walls, and modern, baroque wallpaper in black and gold. Eclectic jewelry pieces sparkle against black shelves, which are lined with beauty products from Phyto and Esuchen.
When a client arrives at an appointment at Alter-Ego Makeup Studio, she is the only one in the makeup chair. This is because proprietor Erica Dennis's primary goal isn't to sell a bunch of cosmetics—it's to give her clients a customized look that makes them feel as gorgeous as an A-list celebrity and as adored as someone handing out free ice cream. To that end, she uses professional-grade tools to apply makeup suited for each customer's event, whether it's for a wedding, prom, or everyday wear.
The services at Le Marx Hair Studio & Spa go way beyond the typical haircuts and coloring treatments found at other salons. Here staffers tend to every part of the body, deftly waxing away unwanted hair and stubble and polishing nails during relaxing mani-pedis. Body wraps target fat cells and toxins lurking within the skin, and infrared-sauna sessions help purge impurities through perspiration. Ladies can even retreat to the spa's womb sauna, where herbal steam refreshes and cleanses the nether regions.
