Around lunchtime, regular customers at this no-frills sandwich shop eyeball the calendar, and mouths a-water for that day’s handcrafted sandwich. Every weekday, staffers build a different daily special. On Wednesdays, it’s barbecue beef. Fridays, calamari. As the lines inch longer, the deli clerks stack, slice, and bundle sandwiches, exchanging observations about the weather or the latest trends in paper-hat fashion as they toss in a bag of chips and a frothy Coke. They wrap the rows of meats and cheeses as the lunch crowd dwindles and start cleaning up for the next day, just as they’ve done since 1937

The name Planet Gemini would imply that this club has two sides to it, but that's not quite accurate. There are at least three. Since opening Planet Gemini more than 20 years ago, the Lane brothers?Frankie and Anthony?have built a venue that functions as a comedy club, a live-music space, and a full-service restaurant. Each night, the club transforms into something new: on Tuesday, Frankie, a master chef, puts together a menu of homemade Italian food as Anthony croons classic Italian songs; Wednesday and Sunday are dance nights, with Latin bands taking the stage as the audience dances the pachanga, merengue, and salsa; and Thursday is for karaoke, during which professional lighting and sound make amateurs feel like rock stars or a circus tiger. On Friday and Saturday night, however, the music gives way to laughter, as the stage is reserved for a rotation of nationally touring comedians. Although Planet Gemini is mostly known for featuring up-and comers?many of whom have been featured on HBO, Comedy Central, and other national programming?they've also had the good fortune to host famous funny men such as George Lopez and Jimmy Fallon.

Among carved wooden furniture reminiscent of an Alpine chalet, Chef Andr? Lengacher anchors checkered tablecloths with Swiss specialties such as lightly breaded schnitzel and creamy fondue. Alongside traditional sandwiches like tuna melts and a pork roast on ciabatta, diners can enjoy a grilled tilapia salad during lunch hours, while those hunting for dinner can order up a rack of lamb or the monstrous farmer's mountain sausage platter, replete with veal bratwurst, polish and garlic sausage spatzli nestled up to a mound of sauerkraut. Trompe l?oeil wall murals transport diner?s to a picturesque mountain village, as a brigade of?musicians ?perform traditional tunes on accordions and violins that harmonize gracefully with opera-trained cuckoo clocks.

Vibrant South American, North American, and Middle Eastern flavors come together between slices of bread at Mundos 2. According to a profile in the Monterey County Weekly, brothers Eli and Fernando Mundo, who also own Mundo's Cafe, not only use creative ingredients in their sandwiches?including paprika-flecked chicken breast and Argentinian tri-tip?but also slather them in secret housemade sauces. Cream cheese and cranberry sauce join turkey breast, mustard aioli coats the pastrami sandwich, and housemade falafel sandwiches may be slathered in hummus. Burgers get flame-broiled before hitting buns, as do eggplant cutlets, red bell peppers, and other veggies.
