Half Moon Bay Kayak Company’s fleet of colorful plastic shells slices through the glimmering waters of Pillar Point Harbor, carrying crews of paddlers past playful harbor seals and chattering pelicans. Co-owners Doug Connor—who has conquered rushing rapids as a member of the United States Wildwater team—and Chris Manchester—who has kayaked along thousands of miles of coastline, including the world’s second-largest barrier reef—channel their passion for paddling into a range of kayak and standup-paddleboard rentals, lessons, and tours. With expeditions to locales as far-flung as Honduras and Mexico, Half Moon provides sea explorers with exotic open-water explorations as well as local excursions to Fitzgerald Marine Reserve, San Gregorio State Beach, and next-door neighbors’ unattended kiddie pools.
Along with shock-absorbent mats, cold steel, and astroturf, the trainers at CrossFit West built their gym on intensity and community. Passionate and certified trainers encourage students to take on more reps and heavier weights with each workout. Classes make use of the facility’s 19 weightlifting platforms, as well as suspended gymnast rings, rowing machines, and climbing ropes. Instructors can scale the workout's load and intensity to meet the needs of the student and use the same core routines for elderly students and active blue oxen. CrossFit West also offers specialized classes in weightlifting, advanced flexibility techniques, and competitive CrossFit team classes. The expansive facility also boasts an onsite massage therapist as well as children's play area equipped with toys, a television, and a DVD player.
The accommodating staff at Bike Dojo, a cycling gym founded by Rob Mylls, keeps the community active with two-wheeled activities ranging from indoor spin classes and kid-based ride programs. Schwinn indoor recreational bikes perch inside the studio space, beckoning exercisers of all levels to pedal their way through energetic classes that boost cardiovascular health and finally put Tour de France commemorative bike shorts to use. Locally attuned guides lead groups on outdoor rides that snake through mountain roads and local trails, and Bike Dojo memberships grant perks such as full access to the facility and discounts on bike parking throughout the city, eliminating the need to dress up your 10-speed as a lamppost's seeing-eye dog. Every new member joining Bike Dojo contributes to a child in the community through Dojo's program, Project B.I.K.E., which donates a bike to a child for every new membership.
Gymnastics Learning Center's experienced instructors engage energized tots with an array of challenging athletic activities that aid children in motor- and social-skill development. KinderGym, JuniorGym, and parent-assisted MiniGym courses teach tots younger than age 6 the fundamentals of muscular movement and how to finally earn their cat's respect. Sixty-minute beginning gymnastics or trampoline classes imbue older pupils with stretching and bouncing basics, and 90-minute intermediate gymnastics or trampoline courses explore more advanced balancing and bounding techniques. Small class sizes ensure that enthusiastic staff can safely escort whippersnappers as they navigate beams, spring from vaults, dangle from rings, or employ the silent treatment on disobedient pommel horses. Customers should check Gymnastics Learning Center's schedule to determine the most appropriate class time and fit.
