Inspired by George Lucas’s state-of-the-art Skywalker Ranch complex, the institute boasts an industry standard, 164-track Pro Tools HD recording system, two recording studios, audio labs, and a film-editing bay. The curriculum covers topics from the fundamentals of sound to high-level arts such as recording, mixing, mastering, and trying to eliminate the screaming in one’s head. Those not enrolled can also jam on the institute’s equipment, renting its studios on an hourly basis or harnessing the onsite technicians’ production savvy.

In one child's hand, a tiny tambourine jangles along to a song while another child claps to the rhythm. It's not an uncommon sight at any of MusicalMe's educational classes, where kids up to age 6 express themselves through music. And parents are encouraged to stay and have fun, whether by helping littler participants along or by ripping a mean solo during a kazoo jam session. With classes holding up to 14 students, each child gets a significant amount of attention and guidance as they learn to appreciate melody and rhythm and learn to love making music.

Danette Martinez has sung in choirs since she was a small child, gained a degree in early childhood education, and taught preschool and daycare for more than 10 years. She uses that experience in her work as a licensed Kindermusik instructor, bringing the time-tested music program to Santa Cruz. During her music classes, children up to age 7 play instruments, sing, and dance, all while learning how to be curious and interact with other kids.

The chord farmers and rhythm artisans at The Music Tree have transmitted melody to the community for years through music lessons. Lug in your musical weapon of choice and hand over your hibernating creativity to their professional, passionate instructors for 30 minutes per week for tutorials in performance and the finer points of jam science. The supportive teachers will guide students on their musical journeys, allowing them to hone the basics and finally defeat Yanni's wicked chord changes in the boss battle of New Age Hero.

Strumming strings since 1999, Chris Bryant shares his hard-won musical knowledge with students through one-on-one and group guitar lessons. He designs all of his lessons to be hands-on, because he believes that's the best way for students to pick up guitar fundamentals—by actually playing it. He bases his curriculum on simple chords and chord progressions, ensuring students learn to play both notes and the transitions between.
