Q&A with Rebecca Wendler, Licensed Acupuncturist

What is one of your signature services? How is it performed?

Acupuncture and herbal formulas are the cornerstone of my practice. I employ bio-communication tools to better understand one's unique constitution. A report is generated that benefits both myself and the client, with charts and graphs detailing organ and vertebral function. Using Shiatsu, Tui na, and Thai massage techniques enhances circulation, which is extremely effective in relieving pain and promoting relaxation.

Out of your entire repertoire, which is your favorite service to perform and why?

I offer a 90-minute traditional Shiatsu floor massage that is preformed on a thick mat. The entire routine is so relaxing?a head-to-toe massage with passive stretching, such as hip mobilization, neck traction, and achilles stretching. It's not difficult to see why most [clients] are snoring in 20 minutes. It makes me happy to give individuals the space they need to just relax.

Is there anything else you want to add that we didn't cover?

In addition to traditional Chinese medicine, I employ techniques to help individuals evaluate their constitution through questions regarding nutrition, cravings, weight gain, problem areas, etc. This will define an individual's "body type" through an assessment of dominant gland function. With this knowledge, miraculous and enduring body transformations occur.

1976 was the United States' 200th birthday. It was the year the $2 bill was issued and the VHS was introduced. It was also the year that licensed acupuncturist and body mender Phil Caylor founded and instructed at one of the first massage schools in Santa Cruz. Now with more than 40 years of experience, Phil expertly slackens musculature with an ample repertoire of techniques.

Initial assessments of the body's overall health may segue into acupuncture to unblock energy flow or into the long, flowing strokes of Swedish massage to ease full-body tension. Whether releasing knots with firm deep-tissue techniques or investigating organ function with nutritional response testing, Phil complements his sessions with relaxation training to ensure wellness at home and pinky-lift training to prevent embarrassment at tea parties.

Certified massage therapist Christine Esler specializes in sports medicine, so she fits right in among the athletes at Bike Dojo, the spin class studio in which she works. One need not be an athlete to benefit from her treatments, though. Her Swedish, deep-tissue, and shiatsu techniques relax tense muscles or biceps that won't unclench from a strongman pose or a guy holding up the humidifier pose. To ease the path of her healing hands, Christine daubs skin with her own signature blend of aromatherapeutic oils. Lavender-scented or unscented oil are also available.
