With more than 60 group fitness classes every week, a fleet of high-tech cardio and weight machines, and a litany of gym amenities and perks, MetroFitness takes the drudgery out of lifting weights and getting fit, infusing workouts with fun and teamwork. Members track their progress and blow past personal goals with Fitlinxx monitoring devices, or sweat alongside fellow athletes in Pilates, stretch yoga, and Zumba dance courses. Seasoned personal trainers help clients maximize their workout efficiency during calorie-crunching exercise sessions, or introduce members to new workout techniques, such as high-intensity Power 45/15 or calming qigong.
As they enter the training circle at Curves, female guests come face-to-face with the smiles of other women. And just as points on a circle share a common distance from the circle's center, workout participants share the experiences of those nearby, trading stations throughout the 30-minute training session. Thirty seconds are spent on a piece of strength-training equipment built for feminine frames and designed to work two opposing muscle groups with a single movement. Exercisers then move on to a recovery station, where they run, jog, or dance to maintain heart rates and keep platforms in place during momentary losses of gravity.
The recently renovated W.A. Gayle Planetarium harnesses the sublime splendor of the night sky within its hemispheric white dome. Two hundred theater-style seats carry astrophiles through interstellar space minus the bothersome side effects of an oxygen-free vacuum. The planetarium’s latticed-framework star projector, in use since 1968, bedazzles armchair astronomers and celestial connoisseurs alike with one-hour seasonal star shows on astral phenomena. Gain extra-powerful cosmic vision with Through the Eyes of Hubble while spying on stellar births and deaths, grandiose galactic collisions, and chaotic storms on Saturn. A Trip Into Space explores black holes and planetary conditions, and Bear Tales and Other Grizzly Stories offers spirited yarns about springtime constellations while incorporating ancient Greek mythology, pirate legends, and interviews with sentient starfish long disgruntled by human appropriation of their heavenly twins.
Casting beams of solar qi on spiritual soils, yogis of all skill levels develop a healthy awareness of their bodies through controlled breathing practices during Sun Ray Yoga's Iyengar or Ayurveda classes. Certified instructor Becky McCune––who has 12 years experience teaching Iyengar classes—leads intrepid students through a flowing and athletic style of yoga that emphasizes proper form and body alignment. She also teaches a slower style of the class for those with specific body soreness or physical ailments. Ayurveda teacher Liz Campbell uses her experiences as a holistic nurse to help guide limbs into poses that relieve pain in the lower back caused by day-long wheel-barrow races. Both instructors teach a five-day schedule geared toward increasing flexibility, preventing injuries, and relieving tension.
