Shape Shifters Pilates and Health Studio's founder, Terra Khemiri, had to face one of her worst fears as a parent: her son developed a medical condition. When he was 6, his doctors discovered that his bone growth was a year and a half behind the normal rate, and they couldn?t explain it. That?s when Terra decided to take matters into her own hands, and she began studying the content of the foods he was eating. She found an alarming number of additives in the form of artificial flavors, colors, and preservatives. When Terra eliminated these additives along with processed sugar and milk products from her son?s diet, his condition is said to have quickly disappeared.
In addition to her nutritional knowledge, her background in rehabilitative and pregnancy massage, homeopathy, and Pilates led her to teach others how to take control of their own wellness at her studio, Shape Shifters. She has developed a program that combines Pilates, nutrition counseling, and therapeutic massage, designed for clients ranging from teen athletes to seniors.
As they enter the training at Curves, female guests come face-to-face with the smiles of other women. And just as points on a circle share a common distance from the circle's center, workout participants share the experiences of those nearby, trading stations throughout the 30-minute training session. One minute is spent on a piece of strength-training equipment built for feminine frames and designed to work two opposing muscle groups with a single movement. Exercisers then move on to a recovery station, where they run, jog, or dance to maintain heart rates and keep platforms in place during momentary losses of gravity.
Log-cabin rafters hang high over the fitness area at Star Pilates, providing a calm, rustic view for clients looking up from their yoga mats or Pilates machines. A collection of cardio equipment such as spin bikes, elliptical machines, and treadmills also populates the floor, which guests can access at any time via electronic key card. During personal training sessions and classes in Pilates or TRX, the gym?s on-site experts help guests immolate unwanted calories and rid mind of distractions through their workouts? focused motions. They also host a variety of specialized classes that range from Pilates for seniors to power Pilates for athletes and superheroes who?ve taken the winter off.
Jill Dailey McIntosh has always been intrigued by the human body and how it moves?so much so that she graduated in 1991 with a kinesiology degree and soon thereafter decided to open her own Pilates teaching studio. But it wasn't until years later that this curiosity would manifest itself in a single question: "How can one aggressively transform the shape of their body while still maintaining proper alignment of the spine?" Eventually Jill began to examine her diverse fitness background, pulling low-impact movements from ballet, Pilates, and even orthopedic-exercise routines to create the basis for her fitness style, The Dailey Method.
Now, more than a decade later, Dailey's fitness routine has ballooned into studios sprawled across more than 10 states and gained praise from Self, Allure, FitPregnancy, and InStyle magazines. Regardless of the location, instructors remain true to Jill's mission of offering a diverse series of exercises that focus on toning and lengthening the body while lengthening the spine and building strong core muscles.
