Arthur Murray has been a leading name in franchise dance since 1912, when the entrepreneur began selling mail-order dance lessons. Expanding his reach, he enlisted teachers to spread his signature dance lessons on first-class steamships and skyrocketed to fame in the '30s after introducing the public to such dances as the Lambeth Walk and The Big Apple. By the 1950s, Arthur and his wife, Kathryn, were hosting their own highly popular TV show on ABC, The Arthur Murray Dance Party, which ran for 12 years. Today, Arthur Murray's team prepares students for rug cutting at special events and weekend nightclub jaunts. Throughout lessons, instructors teach the foundations of two to four dances from a long list of styles that range from Latin to country-western, helping students to learn basic step patterns, timing, and the ability to lead or follow.

Both introductory dancing programs include three private dance lessons that cover the most popular social dances you'll need to pull out of your back pocket the next time you find yourself whisked to a ball or accidentally at an ex's wedding. Durham's program also includes a group class to review the basics with fellow lightfooters, and Raleigh's introductory dancing program gives students the option to choose between a group class or practice dance party. Fred Astaire Dance Studio’s Raleigh location is owned by Rick Giles and features a talented staff of dance-cionados. The Durham location is run by the award-winning duo of Yuriy Simakov and Oksana Klyuchnyk and a limber cabal of instructors.

Beloved boy bands New Kids on the Block and the Backstreet Boys rev the engines of adoration among droves of fans with their poptastic summer tour. New Kids on the Block has been plucking heartstrings and handcrafting harmonies since 1986, combining a collection of international hits such as "Hangin' Tough" and "Step by Step" with five-part choreography and fashionable duds. Following in their footsteps, the Backstreet Boys began blowing up charts in the '90s, producing a songbook replete with favorites such as "I Want It That Way," "All I Have to Give," and "Everybody (Backstreet's Back)." The NKOTBSB Tour brings both acts together for a songful extravaganza, forming the more perfect union prophesied nearly 50 years ago by the Constitution. The May 25 concert also includes the vocal virtuosity of special guest and American Idol winner Jordin Sparks, adding to an ear-pleasing stew of dulcet melodies sure to soothe the most savage beast or most irascible mail carrier.

Visitors will be able to choose from a variety of scheduled Friday- and Saturday-night shows, including improv slams, stand-up, and slide shows of platypus photos.

The not-for-profit Cape Fear Regional Theatre produces plays that both enlighten and educate its performers and the community at large, with an acting troupe made up of professional and amateur actors, both local and imported. Rumors, a farce by Neil Simon, centers on several posh couples gathered for a dinner party at an affluent couple's suburban mansion. When they arrive to discover the servants and the hostess have vanished, leaving behind only the host with a bullet hole in his ear, the guests decide to keep the situation on the down-low, concealing the events from the police, the media, and especially the police-media. In the midst of this, lies grow legs and escape under the floorboards, dropping from ceilings when least expected, and madcap mayhem ensues.
