Founded in 1994 as a community-based recreation center, Joe Dumars Fieldhouse is a 100,000-square-foot facility that houses sports leagues and camps in addition to an arcade-equipped entertainment center and an indoor/outdoor restaurant. Dumars' value of sportsmanship lives on through league play and pickup games on one of nine basketball courts and in two full-sized hockey arenas. Camps and clinics provide activity-based instruction to little ones, and the entertainment center's mini-golf and mini-bowling areas host small-scale enjoyment without enforcing miniature-shoe rentals. After rigorous activity, guests can head to Joe's Southern Grill, an arena-themed eatery with tables made from the Pistons' NBA-championship basketball court and a kitchen supervised by head chef Bill Laimbeer.
Drawing on the latest work in sports psychology, the coaches at Zonifi clinic enrich the three main components of a high-school athlete's mental performance: energy, attitude, and focus. During drills and exercises, they present strategies for generating and conserving stamina, maintaining a positive outlook, limiting distractions, and staying clearheaded under pressure.
Casual and determined athletes alike will find their sport at Game On Sports Center, a complex that hosts everything from drop-in open gyms and parties to private instruction and weeklong camps. Adults and kids can play volleyball, basketball, floor hockey, soccer, and dodgeball on three courts, their fancy footwork benefiting from the all-purpose Sport Court flooring endorsed by the NBA and the NCAA. An additional baseball and softball practice area features two 70-foot batting cages, as well as pitching mounds, L-screens, tees, and other equipment. Though Game On hosts a regular rotation of clinics and camps led by athletes that have played and coached at high school, collegiate, and semi-pro levels, all of their supervised facilities are also available to rent for private parties or for dramatic sports-movie montages.
Bob and Shirley Russell opened Rock Glen Family Resort in 1972. In the years that followed, the Russells realized the need for family-oriented recreation facilities?especially of the outdoors variety?was growing. So they continued adding to the resort until it became what it is today: a quiet country getaway tucked away amid the scenery, where families can retreat from the bustle of busy lives and enjoy numerous activities. Here, you can camp, swim, and even putt your way across an 18-hole mini-golf course that is free for members. You can also make the short walk to Rock Glen Falls, an area that also happens to be one of North America's fossil deposits?so, be sure to keep your eyes peeled for dinosaur bones and cassette tapes sticking up from the soil.
Open seven days a week, the 110,000-square-foot facility at High Velocity Sports gives athletes year-round access to indoor sports and games, such as flag football, dodgeball, volleyball, and golf simulation. Come rain, shine, snow, or meteor shower, guests can challenge a fellow clubber to 18 holes of simulated golf within the allotted two hours. The simulator digitizes 40 of the world’s best courses, allowing duos to navigate the fairways of Pebble Beach or Spyglass without the hassle of plane hopping. Bring your equipment and don a pair of simulated plaid pants as you chip and slice your way through famous greens, dodging sand traps, water hazards, or ball-stealing monkeys.
Fairview Park Recreation Department at the Gemini Center hosts an impressive array of classes—20 each week. They take advantage of the brand new facility's amenities, holding spinning classes in dedicated cycling rooms or teaching aquatic skills in the aerobic studio. They also hold outdoor classes during summer months, taking advantage of the sunshine and green lawns. "It's great to see members push themselves and have fun while doing it," reports the Center's group-exercise coordinator.
Beyond fitness instruction, they also use the facility to host summer camps, athletic leagues, and families looking for a day at the pool. They even built a second pool, exclusively for leisure, with waterslides, a lazy river, and submerged beauty parlors.
