The baker behind Style And Grace Cupcakes is something of an alchemist; she transforms simple ingredients such as brown sugar and fresh strawberries into moist cupcakes crowned with decadent buttercream frosting. She also bakes cookies, cookie pops, and diabetic-friendly cupcakes made with Splenda. Find these handcrafted desserts at the Gastonia Farmers Market, or have them delivered to your door.

When their daughter, Kai, was diagnosed with cerebral palsy, Tracy and Patrick Watkins knew they needed to provide her with as much love and care as possible. They quit their jobs as engineers and launched a bakery named after their little girl and her favorite treats. In the kitchen at Kai’s Kookies and More, the couple ices custom sugar cookies by hand, transforming circles into edible basketballs and rectangles into festive American flags, all of which can be dipped into house-brewed coffee or bundled into baskets, boxes, or bouquets. Sweeter than a kiss from Cap’n Crunch, mangoes and strawberries fill several varieties of cupcakes and 3-inch cheesecakes. In addition to packing their display case with handcrafted confections, Tracy and Patrick supply desserts to eight local restaurants and four Monkey Joe's bounce playgrounds. Visitors can also book Kai's for special events such as tea parties and international summits disguised as children's birthday bashes.

The Blushing Bakeshop's first location opened in Washington DC in 2006. Riding a tide of good reviews and buttercream, the bakers soon expanded to Charlotte. The secret to success, as one might expect, lies within their recipes. They make more than 80 flavors of cupcakes, using premium ingredients such as Valrhona cocoa powder, pure Madagascar bourbon vanilla, and European sweet cream butter. More basic ingredients such as milk, eggs, and produce come from local providers to ensure freshness. They remain equally stringent with the ingredients put into their larger cakes; they favor a swiss meringue buttercream frosting that's light and less sweet than traditional frostings, and only using heavy fondant for accent decorations and emergency tire patches. They modify their recipes to suit their customers needs as well, preparing sugar-free, vegan, eggless, and gluten-free versions of many of their treats.

In 2005, Geoff and Missy Owen had a dream of breaking up Southend's chain of fast-food franchises and opening up their own mom and pop bagel shop full of handmade bagels and cream cheese. Today, with the help of Ashley Wyrick, a culinary arts graduate from Johnson & Wales University, they operate Owen's Bagel and Deli, which is known for its New York?style steamed bagel sandwiches piled high with Boar's Head meats. Rib-sticking lunches include the Bob-B-Que, with ham, bacon, smoked cheddar, and barbecue sauce; and the Kool Jules, with turkey, veggie cream cheese, and sprouts on a bialy. Vegetarian options abound, and Owen's also offers food kids can get behind, much like the menu at an imaginary tea party. Salads, wraps, and locally made coffee from Pure Intentions round out the options.

Patrons who pass beneath Cafe Monte French Bakery and Bistro's bold red awning seemingly zoom across the Atlantic into a Parisian bistro hung with French artwork and vintage photographs. Platters of mussels arrived drenched in white wine and butter, and pommes frites proudly share the spotlight with steak and french green beans. In the kitchen, chefs sizzle crêpes to a golden brown for breakfast, or fill them with savory lobster and crab for lunch and dinner. Patrons can dine alfresco on an outdoor patio or linger inside the eatery's canary-hued walls, where satisfied customers gather around a piano to sing odes to their favorite French pastry chefs.
