Fusion Cross-Training offers group and personal training; it's not an exercise factory where rows of strangers sweat silently, but rather a chic, imitate studio where the staff works with the workouts and the heart, muscles, and mind exercise in unison. During one month of membership, students of health get unlimited access to cross-training sessions that include 25 minutes of cardio (running, biking, and rowing), a half hour of strength/resistance training with weights and bands, and 20 minutes of flexibility development via yoga and relaxation exercises. The workouts—which help clients lose weight, tone muscle structure, relieve stress, and burn through fat like hot frying pans—are led by qualified, motivational coaches, and end with a rest period that incorporates aromatherapy and massage to help relax both body and mind. Up to 1,000 calories can be burned in one session.

Exercise slings and punching bags hang above the wood floors of Jersey Girl Fitness' 3,500 square-foot studio, where ranks of all-female staff and visitors use them to build up and tone muscle. Instructors help visitors sweat out stress in dance and fitness classes such as TRX, boxing, Pilates, yoga, hip-hop, boot camp, kettle bells, and tabata.
At Subversion Fitness, personal trainers and staff members educate and inspire clients in a boutique-style gym with flat-screen TVs, fitness classes, and onsite massages. Workout wizards ensure that gym rookies get paired with the right equipment for their calorie roasts and offer no-contract memberships trimmed with free fitness assessments, custom workout plans, and nutritional guidance. Come mornings and evenings, nine classes allow guests to indulge in group fitness, enjoying samba during Zumba or studying the finer points of worm hunting during Early Bird Bootcamp. The gym also houses Kubat Massage Studio, helmed by a licensed massage therapist eager to melt muscles and oust knots with six different massage modalities. Subversion Fitness is as green as Sam-I-Am’s cash, and the studio extends a friendly hand to eco-awareness by recycling, employing a waterless filtration system and refurbished equipment, and eschewing paper whenever possible.
Irving Fryar knows a thing or two about fitness. As the first overall draft pick in 1984, the All-American wide receiver went on to play professional football for 17 years and currently ranks in the top 20 in career receptions, receiving touchdowns, and receiving yards. Today, as founder of Irving Fryar Boot Camp, he leads a staff of exercise experts who maintain a fun, supportive environment and provide hands-on training to those looking to improve their overall fitness, achieve a personal fitness goal, or obtain a martial-arts belt. The team leads large groups of students outdoors in various calisthenics and running drills. They also offer custom eating plans to supplement workout regimens, which may involve giving clients a 50-pound cell phone, to make you pay for your minutes in an entirely new way.
Though Retro Fitness may boast a time-tested approach to fitness, the gym itself is anything but old fashioned. The stationary bikes are hooked up to the Internet, and treadmills sport personal TVs. Guests can also take a variety of group fitness classes, including yoga, kickboxing, and Zumba.
