Diagnosed with a disruptive neurological condition at age 10, studio founder David Kiser discovered Bikram yoga while he was seeking alternative treatments to help alleviate his chronic neck and back pain. After his first Bikram class in 2003, David noticed moderate relief of his symptoms, and after that day, he dedicated himself to continued practice, earning his teacher's certification three years later. David credits his pain relief to the two breathing exercises and 26 standing, seated, and hula-hooping postures of Bikram yoga, which promote healthy organ function by circulating freshly oxygenated blood throughout the entire body. During each class, instructors crank the practice space's temperature up to 105 degrees with 40% humidity to promote physical well-being. In the sultry atmosphere, students’ bodies safely sink into each stretch, flushing toxins out of freshly opened pores. Afterward, onsite showers and locker rooms allow students to recompose themselves while planning a class field trip to the nearest glacier for some postclass relief.

During the mid-1970s, two touring musicians named Ed Blanton Jr. and Bubba Willis opened the original Encore Music to share their vast knowledge with aspiring tunesmiths and to stock a variety of quality instruments that would rival the inventory of a large franchise store. Though successful, the partners eventually went their separate ways in 1986. Ed Blanton Jr.’s son, Ed Blanton III, revived Encore Music two decades later with the same goals in mind, calling upon his experiences in the East Coast punk-rock scene to motivate young musicians and mohawks to reach for the sky. In its current incarnation, Encore Music now offers music lessons in guitar, bass, piano, and drums, and stocks all the equipment necessary to create an at-home recording studio.

Scuba divers glide amid the underwater wreckage just off the coast of Charleston. They flit through gaps in decommissioned military APCs, a deck-boat, and a U.S. Coast Guard cutter, all encrusted with starfish and barnacles. Other fish may join them as they drift around the debris of an old wooden schooner, float over a massive natural limestone ledge, or paddle around vacation spots.

These are just some of the sites Lowcountry Scuba visits on its dive charters through the open waters of the Atlantic Ocean. Before Lowcountry's customers can reach this step, however, they must train under one of the dive shop's PADI-certified scuba instructors. The center introduces students to the scuba-diving craft through Discover Scuba classes, hands-on sessions held in the pool or in the calm waters of a private lake with a strict no-sea-serpent policy. Instructors also teach to PADI standards with classes ranging from open-water diver certification to specialty classes in nitrox-enriched air and rescue diving.

Meanwhile, dive-shop staff outfit customers for excursions. These knowledgeable technicians can field questions about nearly any item, and supply equipment not only for diving but for spearfishing and lobstering as well.

Growing up in Brooklyn, John Madden cultivated an eclectic set of musical tastes, from rock and blues to jazz and classical. He picked up performance chops at an early age by forming his own bands, which he complemented with formal training by studying jazz and contemporary music in college. Upon moving to Charleston, Madden narrowed his focus on teaching and performing guitar and bass. He estimates that in the 15 years since he held his first strumming lesson, he's taught hundreds of students?many of whom have gone on to perform locally and win scholarships to study music at the college level or with rare tropical songbirds.
