Vincent Eufemia has always loved animals, but his busy schedule as a computer consultant once kept him from giving proper attention to his furry best friend, a labrador named Cassady. After trying out several different daycares, he realized that at many of them, the dogs were not permitted outside to play. This absence of canine fun spurred him to leave consulting behind and open Emerald Street Kennels, a pet daycare and boarding facility anchored by an enormous indoor and outdoor play area. Four different rooms categorize dogs according to size, age, and temperament. When they're not frolicking in one of these spaces or the fluffy grass, up to nine overnight pooches can each lounge in their very own 4"x6" doggie apartment. Each one comes fully furnished with rubber matting, a trampoline bed, and a chaise lounge upholstered in bacon.
Feline guests reside in the Cattery, a block of padded cat condos with a variety of toys and a separate ventilation system to prevent airborne diseases. Owners can check in on their pets via Emerald Street's website, whose camera feed displays each animal sleeping soundly and chasing dream cars to the sounds of classical music.
When it comes to breed-appropriate dog grooming, you won’t find many people more knowledgeable than the staff at Wags To Riches All Breed Pet Salon. Resident groomer Lauren got her start 13 years ago in the dog-show ring, giving her a good introduction to proper breed styling and general dog care. She now puts those skills to use at Wags To Riches, keeping dogs pampered and healthy. She gives dogs a fresh scent during baths, and then uses breed-specific scissor clips to groom fur. In addition to cutting hair, she cuts nails for finicky pets and cleans ears and glands to ensure that pets stay in peak physical condition. For every six groomings a pet comes in for, their owners receive $10 off the next service, allowing them to save a little cash or splurge on a beef-jerky collar.
Full-service pet sitting for dogs ($16 for a 30-minute visit), cats ($14 for a 20-minute visit), and small animals ($12) includes a visit with pet playtime and feeding, a walk, litter and bedding change, brushing, medication, and email updates (the nature of visits vary based on the kind of pet). Royal Pet Care will also conduct basic home maintenance, including watering plants, bringing in packages, taking out the trash, and more. Customers can apply the value of their Groupon and pay the difference to upgrade to pet taxi and home services. Newly built with a fleet of educational exhibits, the nonprofit Idaho Public Aquarium brims with underwater wildlife that scuttles, swims, and frolics, overseen by staff members and dedicated volunteers. Families peruse exhibits that give insight into a slice of aquatic life and emphasize its continuance, such as stingray touch tank and the shark nursery, where guests can witness baby sharks peeking out of their eggs while crooning peaceful lullabies or playing peekaboo. Added to the list are new exhibits, such as the 17,000-gallon sea turtle tank and the North Pacific cold water tank. Sea-resident enthusiasts can also participate in birthday parties with private tours and a nighttime animal feeding.
