Besides the massive driving range in Washington, D.C.'s National Mall, very few golf courses give players the chance to play in the presence of a historical monument. Stone Mountain Golf Club, however, is one such course, thanks to its home within the famous Stone Mountain Park.
As players play rounds on the club's two 18-hole golf courses?named the Lakemont and the Stonemont?stone reliefs of Confederate leaders Robert E. Lee, Jefferson Davis, and Stonewall Jackson hover in the distance above the park's massive lake, frozen in a permanent march into battle.
Though it's common for players to find themselves awing at this massive carving?noted as the largest bas-relief in the world?more immediate concerns can be found at their feet. On the Stonemont Course, a 1969 work by famed architect Robert Trent Jones, Sr., players must focus on accuracy and course management as they string their golf balls down fairways lined by Georgia pines. On the shorter, less difficult, and more recently built Lakemont Course, the lake is a major factor on the front nine. This is where it dramatically affects play on five of the first six holes, though it eventually gives way to rocky outcroppings as the back nine's chief concerns.
