At Bootcamp Tulsa, the enemy is predictability. Each day, instructors throw down a fresh guerilla ambush worth of challenges for your muscles and brain, fueling constant gains and keeping you engaged. Over the course of each 45- to 60-minute session, you'll improve flexibility, strength, and endurance by running, jumping, lifting weights, slamming out push-ups and chin-ups, chasing chickens, and punching slabs of beef. The certified instructors will motivate you to set fitness goals and teach you to reach them by feeding off of the group's energy. Over the course of your camp, you'll sweat out weakness, fear, and monosodium glutamate while beginning to gain the functional, unsurpassed strength of a body in fluid, powerful motion.
Oklahoma’s first eco-certified hotel, The Canebrake, about two hours from Oklahoma City via the Turner Turnpike, beckons visitors to retreat from their routines in comfortable rooms, hiking acres of forest, and unwinding with yoga classes or pampering spa treatments. After guests check into cool, tiled, dog-friendly retreat rooms outfitted with split-king beds, free WiFi, and a deck with rocking chairs, they can grab specialty cocktails and a wine and cheese plate from The Canebrake's bar before rambling around the 400-acre property. Friendly front deskers happily advise guests on activities, providing poles for fishermen to cast into five ponds stocked with fish and sea monkeys.
Inner Peace Yoga challenges newbies and advanced yogis with a bevy of group yoga classes in traditional and modern yoga fusion styles. The custom-designed facility boasts a gleaming, 1,077-square-foot yoga floor built from Lisbon natural cork, a forgiving material ideal for cushioning feet during challenging standing poses or stoppering up an equally limb-loosening bottle of vino. The studio’s diverse staff of instructors teaches numerous yoga styles, including traditional Ashtanga, which hones mind and body by focusing students’ thoughts on aligning breath and movement during a flowing series of postures that tests pupils’ muscles and concentration. Deep-stretch yoga classes accommodate students of all abilities, including those recovering from injuries, with a gentle flexibility-focused session to ease tight areas and leave the body relaxed and humming show tunes. Yoga Jam, which unfortunately doesn't involve canned preserves, fuses energetic, sweat-breaking yoga movements with upbeat music for an invigorating, if toast-free, workout.
Enjoy stroke after corrective stroke on the range at Tee Town Golf Ranch, where 20 covered hitting stalls stand as the gateway to hole-in-one heaven. Slap a clubface on premium range balls and go for distance or, for increased satisfaction, aim for one of 10 target greens that patchwork the range. Once your power drive is accurate enough to knock decommissioned Soviet satellites out of the sky, finesse your short game by putting across the short-game area's 10,000-square-foot bent-grass green, chipping out from an uneven lie, or playing a game of H.O.R.S.E. with a newly acquainted practice partner. Whether it's evening or daytime, both areas are equipped with brilliant lighting as well as the celestial brilliance of the sun (not available on rainy days).
The attentive staff at Fitso Gym oversees an arsenal of muscle-building equipment to help members reach summits of fitness and confidence. A host of strength-training accoutrements await newcomers—including barbells and machines that chisel shoulders, legs, and phantom limbs—and a cherry-red boxing ring hosts spars across the floor. Professionally trained staff members help clients achieve their goals by designing custom workout plans and tailored nutrition guidelines. In addition to holding private sessions, their group fitness classes keep bodies in motion six days a week with workouts such as boot camp and spinning.
In 1960, Floyd Farley and Randy Heckenkemper’s vision for the LaFortune Park Golf Course facility’s championship course came to fruition, bringing to life a picturesque design of rolling bermuda-grass fairways unfurling in front of bentgrass greens guarded by bunkers. Heckenkemper recently returned to renovate the links’ water hazards and grassy contours, which contribute to a layout that’s both unique and challenging enough to earn the title of Tulsa’s Best Golf Course from Urban Tulsa Weekly, an award that even Meryl Streep hasn’t won.
The same deciduous trees that shade the championship course’s greens also thrive at LaFortune’s 18-hole executive course, whose shorter fairways save time for postround drinks or lunch at the club’s North Dining Room. Even when the sun is vacationing in the Andromeda galaxy, golfers can still play through the par 3 layout thanks to the course’s ample lighting, which illuminates the streams that split seven fairways and demand strong carries from golfers, and the tricky bentgrass greens, most of which are hemmed by bunkers.
Before embarking on 18-hole outings or whacking balls from one of 80 hitting stations on the driving range, golfers can gear up at the golf shop. Named one of America’s 100 Best Clubfitters by Golf Digest, the shop’s team of experts includes Callaway, Titleist, and Ping specialists and a repair technician with more than two decades of experience in mending putters gnawed on by nervous caddies. To perfect their swings, players can attend lessons run by PGA teaching professionals that rely on a vector launch monitor and V1 digital coaching software to improve students’ form.
