Teams clad in protective goggles scatter into a mountain field thick with laurel, rhododendron, and brier as they seek cover, their markers locked and loaded. Hearing paintballs whiz through the brush, a player dives into prone position. Adjusting her goggles after colliding with the ground, the combatant freezes, notices the silhouette of a whitetail deer crouched in the brush just yards away, and lets down her guard long enough to appreciate the moment before taking new aim. At Pocono Mountain Paintball, players step onto 12 fields—including three scenario fields—ranging from untouched natural terrain to 1,700 feet of trenches and sandbag bunkers. To maximize players' game time, Pocono's staff maintains a reservation system that limits the fields to 100 players per day. Further touches include camouflage overall rentals, an online FAQ with participant advice, and changing rooms with hot showers so players can spruce up before meeting Mom for a post-game debriefing. Pocono's crew also coordinates rafting, biking, and kayaking packages through partner company Whitewater Rafting Adventures.

Black lights spill across an indoor arena, casting a fluorescent glow over a squadron of laser-tag players as they wait silently for the start of a new round. Suddenly, fast-paced music blares and the air is filled with more flashes of red than a confused stoplight. Friendly battles like these are everyday occurrences at Fun Station. The sprawling family-centric center houses everything from air hockey, to skee-ball, to a miniature bowling alley. Laughter emerges from within colliding bumper cars, while pizza and hotdogs anchor the snack shop's menu. The family attractions also extend outside, where visitors are often found settling land disputes at a miniature-golf course or speed across a tire-lined go-kart track.

The Adventure Center at Skytop Lodge sits high in the forests of the Pocono Mountains, spanning nearly 6,000 acres that include zipline courses, Old West–themed paintball fields, and a rock-climbing wall more than 30 feet tall. There's also an onsite golf course, where golfers can practice their swings on 18 holes arranged to resemble Arnold Palmer's face. In addition to these land-based adventures, customers can kayak or cast out for rainbow trout or bass on one of the pine-fringed lakes. After a day of recreation, visitors can head to the lodge. The comfy accommodations let customers recharge, and offer access to a swimming pool and full-service spa, where therapists soothe muscles with aromatherapy massages and shiatsu or lavender-infused reflexology treatments.

An armored military truck rumbles around a bend into yet another stretch of dark woods. Something within the trees glows, catching swaying branches in the light. Or are those swaying bodies? Suddenly, hordes of undead monsters charge out of the woods, attacking the truck. The only thing to do is aim, shoot, and repeat. Welcome to Lehigh Valley Zombies, an interactive apocalypse. Escorting visitors in trucks and arming them with paintball guns, the event's organizers then drive out into the woods, where they're met with special effects lighting and roving zombies. Passengers pick off the attackers with paintballs before they reach the truck. The fast-paced fun combines thrilling action with horror, and the trail holds plenty of surprises. Much like in real life, the zombies don't fire back, though each acting shambler stays safe with a mask that is equal parts protective and horrifying. Back at basecamp, victorious guests enjoy campfires, food, and other forms of seasonal fun.

Stacked logs, stumps, and tangled thickets make good hiding spots—or are they obstacles? Clad in camouflage and goggles, players navigate that question while stalking the woods at The Paintball Asylum. They grasp paintball guns during color-splattering rounds of the game, which resembles a grittier Capture the Flag. Extra supplies for the matches are available at The Paintball Asylum's pro shop, and the space accommodates birthday and bachelor parties, as well as corporate team-building events.
