Throughout the eight-week summer session, the School of Nashville Ballet offers a variety of dance classes for people of all skill levels. Experience is not necessary for the classes, which are all taught by professional instructors. Dance styles covered in classes include jazz dance, hip-hop, contemporary, or tap. The modern and fusion Pilates fitness-dance classes are open for all who wish to get in shape and groove at the same time, while ballet-minded individuals can choose from several options. The intro-to-ballet class teaches the basics, and intermediate and advanced ballet classes help students hone their skills and master tricky maneuvers. Beginners are encouraged to attend classes early in the session, as instruction will progress throughout the season. Check the schedule and call the School of Nashville Ballet for specific information on class availability.
Rumba serves up Caribbean-, South Pacific-, and Latin-inspired plates in a chic, tropically inspired atmosphere. Sate burgeoning grumbles with coconut shrimp ($5) and crispy num-pang vegetable sandwiches ($3), ideally sized for one human, or please multiple tongue buds with spiced sesame tuna topped with sesame caviar and sided by miso-potato purée ($13). Heartier main entrees such as the signature shrimp masala unite the edible soulmates of mild Indian curry and jasmine rice ($18), while grilled satay skewers dive into three sauces and include South African sausage ($9), Montego beef with toasted coconut ($9), and good old-fashioned chicken ($8). Cool down a flaming mouth bungalow with the quenching power of tropical cocktails: Rumba specializes in hand-muddled mojitos ($9) and fresh pisco sours ($8). Ten draft beers and a long list of wines from Argentina, Chile, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa are also available.
The gleaming, stainless-steel brew cylinders at Blackstone Brewing Company's alcohol alchemist lab froth with the precursors of an array of quality craft beers, dispensed freely from the taps of its brewpub. Like legal-drinking-age Charlie Buckets, pairs of guests stare in wide-eyed wonder at the brand-new brewing and bottling apparatuses during an exclusive tour of the brewery's grounds. Tour-goers learn about the beer and how it is made and may choose to drive to Blackstone Restaurant & Brewery to sip six samples of the final product, such as the Nut Brown Ale, St. Charles Porter, and Chaser Pale. A Blackstone-emblazoned pint glass and four bottles of beer follow each guest home at the end of the visit.
One of Nashville's most venerable and storied music venues, Exit/In has been presenting live music since 1971. Concertgoers can fill empty ear canals with John Doe and Jill Sobule's wafting harmonies during their debut duet performance or listen to the Californian alternative hip-hop artist Lyrics Born's verbal dexterity and wicked wordplay, the hard-earned fruit of a diet of pulped thesauruses. The Grammy Award-winning, Austin-based Latin funk orchestra Grupo Fantasma will appear with fiddling sensation Warren Hood, who exhibits devil-humbling command over his stringed instrument. The American blues and rock band Old Union will be celebrating its 10th anniversary in the city where they got their start with a commemorative concert of classics for old fans and new listeners alike. A standing-room venue, Exit/In eschews seating for upright toe-tapping and ample space to practice leg lifts in between encores.
A white cue ball speeds over the green felt of The End Zone Sports Grill's pool table, attempting to grab hold of the elusive eight ball. Between rounds, competitors sip cold brews and cocktails, consume spicy buffalo wings, or watch flat-screen TVs showing thrilling sports or equally thrilling city-council meetings.
Belcourt Taps celebrates the charms and flavors of the South with regular live music, and gourmet twists on comfort classics. The festivities begin before diners even step through the door. Outside, a sprawling patio surrounds the restaurant, lit up at night with warm sconce lighting and candlelight. There, guests can dig into gourmet stuffed burgers and tacos with pulled pork, shrimp, or chicken. Diners can also explore tapas and shareable plates of fried green tomatoes and nachos or dive solo into a barbecue pulled pork sandwich.
Inside, regular live music showcases the talents of singers and songwriters who carry on the Nashville sound. Golden yellow walls brighten the room, adding the feel of a southwestern cantina or a southwestern cantina owned by a pyromaniac, and soft overhead lighting creates the ideal atmosphere for a draft beer.
