In 1542, explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo became the first European to step foot on what would become the West Coast of the United States. Since its founding more than four centuries later, the Cabrillo National Monument Foundation has celebrated this accomplishment?as well as the greater history and the natural scenery of San Diego's only national park, located on the southwest tip of the U.S.

  • Size: a two-mile hiking trail and three exhibit rooms fill a sprawling indoor-outdoor space
  • Eye Catcher: historical re-enactors dress in 19th-century clothing thanks to the Living History program?a sight rivaled only by the view of San Diego's coastline from 400 feet up
  • Permanent Mainstay: The Old Point Loma Lighthouse, which first lit up the night's sky on November 15, 1855
  • Annual Celebration: September's Cabrillo Festival, which recreates the voyage of Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo
  • Don't Miss: an old radio-station building where They Stood the Watch profiles the military history of the Point Loma peninsula
  • Special Programs: take a ranger-led bayside walk under the full moon, watch whales, or feel famous while whales watch you
  • Pro Tip: at low tide visitors can peer into tide pools and see the diverse wildlife that's normally hidden

A night spent dancing to a DJ at the club burns calories and works up a sweat, so why not put the dance floor on a 5K course? That's exactly what Nocturnal Lands has done?participants run, walk, or dance their way through a race course illuminated by interactive light shows and pumping with electronic dance music from live DJs. After partying through multiple DJ stages, revelers finish at a raucous main stage after-party. Headliner DJ?s soundtrack the event on the main stage while participants celebrate crossing the finish line as a member of the Night Nation.

What started as a camp founded and staffed by schoolteachers has turned into a year-round surf school for one reason: people love to surf. Today, the school offers everything from lessons for first-timers to professional surf clinics for advanced surfers. Their teaching model focuses on private and small group lessons, which they believe is the quickest and easiest way to learn to ride the waves. And for their graduates, they’ve even created a surf team that is cheered on by countless adoring seagulls.

Baby Boot Camp was designed by fitness expert Kristen Horler, who sought a method for new moms to shed their post-pregnancy weight without having to hire a babysitter or personal trainer. Rather than working out away from their babies, mothers in Horler's Strollfit classes keep their strollers close, even pushing them along to use them as resistance. Taught by a nationally certified trainer, each session also relies on exercise tubing and the moms' own body weight to help tone muscles and regain their pre-baby silhouettes.
