New Britain-Berlin YMCA's 90,000-square-foot complex helps members improve their lives through community programs, personal training programs, and a variety of fitness facilities, including a new massage studio. Besides bulking up on full circuit of Nautilus strength equipment or powering through Precor treadmills, steppers, and ellipticals, visitors can join friends for games of basketball in the double gymnasium or chuck tomatoes at the walls of five on-site racquetball courts. The clear waters of the 25-yard swimming pool parallel the mirrored walls of an 800-square-foot fitness studio, where members can partake in several health and wellness programs throughout the week.
The gym has all the tools of a good workout: treadmills, barbells, rowing machines, elliptical machines, medicine balls, and giant tires. And with a membership cap at 300 people, individuals at the gym won’t have to worry about long waits for equipment. The well-intentioned move by Joe Forsyth to establish a limited membership meant he and the other certified personal trainers could really focus their attention on each and every person that swings a kettlebell or airplane wing. The personal trainers are well-versed in exercise physiology and nutrition, and train individuals ranging from those with special needs to seasoned athletes.

Half-hour private lessons begin with Paul evaluating his student's swing and physical condition, and then devising a custom lesson plan that may incorporate video instruction, training aids, and equipment recommendations. For group lessons, students are divided into beginner, intermediate, or advanced classes. Early instruction focuses on the basics of setup and etiquette, and later sessions take on the more advanced tactics, such as short-game approaches and how to make a four look like a two on the scorecard.
