At 14,000 square feet, The Climbing Wall might be the next best thing to the great outdoors. Challenges abound for climbers, as the staff resets the routes several times a week. Top-roping walls stretch up to 30 feet high and present participants with obstacles such as overhangs and slabs. The bouldering walls are equally as imposing, with three top outs. Both adults and kids can take classes to learn how to tackle the walls and show off their skills in the real world by skipping the stairs and climbing up to their bedrooms.
Climbers stand at the base of the textured plywood and rock surfaces that climb the walls of Kendall Cliffs' 7,000-foot space and picture themselves reaching the summit—a 35-foot high arch that reaches across to the opposite wall. Designed by Nicros, the facility presents varying gravitational challenges for scalers to mount, from tackling the bouldering cave to tickling the bouldering cave's petroglyphs. Intrepid and experienced instructors lead climbing classes, calibrated for varying skill levels and covering topics such as knot tying, belaying, bouldering, and sport routes.
The experienced climbing staff at Climb North oversees an indoor facility with 30 rock-climbing paths. In addition to advanced climbing routes and bouldering walls, there’s a beginning climbing area for the uninitiated and a grassy slope for mountain goats. The facility also offers monthly packages to avid climbers and party rentals for adventurous celebrations, which include cakes and snacks in a decorated party area before group climbs.
Adrenaline flows freely inside Laser Storm Pittsburgh's laser-tag battleground as teams of players wage infrared war over objectives and bases. In addition to hosting laser battles, Laser Storm offers an arcade filled with skee-ball, three big-screen arcade games, and other ticket-spewing machines. Any tickets won in the arcade can be used to purchase prizes from a well-stocked booth or attached to a fishing line to lure laser-tag enemies out of their hiding spots.
Lasers flash across a 4,000-square-foot arena. Bumper boats splash against each other in a 135,000-gallon lake. An elastic EuroBungy harness flings bouncers skyward for death-defying flips. These are just a few of the attractions and activities at Fun 'n' Stuff, where families can also fill their days by racing go-karts, climbing a rock wall, or gliding around a rink on rented roller skates. Guests who want to breathe in fresh air can putt through two 18-hole mini golf courses, whack balls in five hardball and four softball cages, and slide down a 24-foot inflatable slide. The littlest visitors play in a ball pit, whereas the Extreme Looping Bikes send older ones soaring through the air, just like the majestic eagle they rode to their middle-school graduation.
Climbing indoors is nothing like traversing a vertical sea of mutated jungle-gym obstacles. Cleveland Rock Gym’s walls are covered with textured surfaces and challenging formations that will provide you with a calf-toning workout, so make sure to bring every baby whale you can find. More importantly, you’ll be in a controlled environment where you can practice moves that will put public menace Spider-Man to shame. The introduction to climbing class will introduce you to the basics of wall ascension, so you’ll be climbing through indentions, protrusions, overhangs, underhangs, and cracks in no time.
