Though the term “boot camp” may conjure images of aggressive drill sergeants barking orders as their recruits struggle through grueling tasks, Body Proud Fitness Boot Camp sessions are much the opposite. Their enthusiastic trainers motivate patrons in outdoor boot-camp classes, issuing positive reinforcement as they work together to burn calories and excess fat through challenging, but not defeating, exercises. Each one-hour session is designed to promote fat loss with a varied routine of interval training that my involve weightlifting, push-ups, sit-ups, and plyometrics. Many activities require participants to band together to tackle obstacles, bolstering a sense of support and camaraderie. Instructors then lead exercisers in a cool down with yoga and stretching, leaving them more limber than a linguini noodle basking in a jacuzzi.
In addition to the calorie-blasting boot camps, Body Proud Fitness Boot Camp’s weight-loss specialties include one-on-one personal training and nutritional counseling. Clients gain access to the Truestar at-home training and nutrition programs, which lead them toward overall wellness with custom meal plans and supplements paired with tailored fitness routines.
At Pittsburgh Alternative Health, friendly staffers join Doctor of Naturopathy Darrell Misak and needle-free acupressure specialist, Dr. Wan Huang to restore and maximize bodily health and mental well-being with holistic treatments. Toxins are expelled during sauna sessions, where infrared light saps contaminants from muscles, and relaxing ionic footbaths, which kiss the feet with gentle electrical charges. Relaxed patrons can glide into a private mental-rest room, where a programmed audio-visual show lures minds into a state of alert relaxation with music, lights, and footage of baby pandas learning to cartwheel. The health center can also aid patients on the road to health with analytic testing. During an EAV test, technicians use a fusion of mechanical methods and ancient acupuncture pressure points to study the body’s energy. The results can pinpoint sensitivities to foods, chemicals, or existentialist poems that may be decreasing energy or causing other health problems.
ASSET draws science class out of textbooks and places it squarely into student hands in the form of educational experiments and a curriculum designed to motivate student interest in the subject. In addition to promoting a deeper interest, hands-on scientific learning employs critical-thinking skills that can foster lifelong learning. ASSET currently works with 150,000 students in 140 Pennsylvania school districts to increase their exposure to science education. However, ASSET is still in need of donations to fund a kit of mentally stimulating science materials for a class of 30 elementary and middle school students in the Pennsylvania school system. Kits contain enough science materials for children to conduct between 9 and 12 weeks of scientific experiments and investigations.
