Zesty aromas of jambalaya, gumbo, corn crab bisque, and pralines fill the air of the New Orleans School of Cooking. It's here where a talented team of local chefs share their culinary insights while teaching the basics of Louisiana cooking with flavorful fervor. Since 1980, scores of well-known talent have demonstrated bayou?style cooking in their home base: a renovated French Quarter molasses warehouse, originally built in the 1800s.
Like their building, the dishes they teach are part of long-standing New Orleans traditions. Their demonstrations cover dishes from gumbo to jambalaya to crawfish etoufee. As they teach, the chefs weave in elements of local history, trivia, and legend, too, painting a portrait of the city that extends beyond its edibles.
"What do you want to create?" That is the question posed to each of New Orleans Paint N Party's visitors. During the studio's energetic parties, local artists teach visitors to put brush on canvas, creating colorful projects such as streetcars and city skylines. The staff keeps it simple. They greet each visitor with a presketched canvas and a trove of supplies, including brushes and paints. New Orleans Paint N Party also invites its customers to bring along food and potable beverages; they'll even supply the wine opener, ice bucket, ice pick, and drinking glasses.

Taught by native French speakers, Alliance Francaise courses use language immersion plus video, audio, and textbooks to teach communication skills to students planning travel in the French-speaking world, seeking an advantage in the global business world, or craving a deeper understanding of cartoon skunks. Courses are offered at every skill level, which can be determined by taking Alliance Francaise's placement test (required for all new students except beginners). Classes are limited to 10 students to ensure every budding Franco-speaker gets individualized instruction. Today's deal includes the cost of a Connexions textbook and CD (normally $60), though it does not cover the cost of berets or berets stuffed with baguettes. Many courses meet on Saturday and weekday evenings to accommodate busy professionals and full-time students.
Offering BYOB art classes in a welcoming, instructor-assisted atmosphere, Corks N Canvas provides a laidback setting for self-expression. Participants will receive step-by-step instruction to craft striking artwork they can take home at the end of the session and place above their mantle, secret trap-door bookcase, or army-men-figurine reenactment of the battle of Pork Chop Hill. Choose among several sessions (click on the address of your chosen location to see a calendar of events) that teach budding strokesters to paint vibrant doggie portraits, landscapes, or abstract-expressionist renditions of the DMV. The creative paintventure may finally spark the dormant artist within that’s been reclusively hiding like Boo Radley since the finger-painting period.
