With hundreds of locations throughout the world, Fitness Together contours the global musclescape one individual at a time with customized workouts. Beginning with a body consultation and assessment, clients are classified into different training zones leading to goal-specific programs that help them reach their true fitness potential. During the 45-minute sweat sessions, a trained muscle tutor supervises squats to ensure muscles are properly stretched and showered in both praise and post-perspiring soap. The one-on-one attention allows the trainer to fine-tune movements, tone trouble zones, and push students to keep going when they'd otherwise quit or become distracted by the fragile beauty of a passing hummingbird.
The organizers of Garden State BrewFest invite beer lovers to sample the ales and lagers of tri-state-area brewers in the name of charity. After collecting donations of canned food for the Community FoodBank of New Jersey, gate attendants usher visitors in to taste two-ounce samples, each freshly poured by representatives from breweries such as Philadelphia’s Yards Brewing Company and Cape May County’s Tuckahoe Brewing Company. An array of entertainment engages guests throughout the four-hour fete, including live bands, a beer-pong tournament, and a keg-icing contest. Their Homebrew Competition lets DIY brewers enter their best fall-season beers, and the grand-prize winner gets to work alongside master brewer Brendan O’Neil of New Jersey Beer Co. Brewery for a day. Garden State BrewFest’s team donates a portion of the proceeds to St. Jude Children's Hospital.
In hands-on workshops and classes, skilled seamstresses teach students both the fundamentals of sewing and the art of turning yarn and fabric into fashion. Kid-friendly classes include six-week workshops, during which pint-size clothiers roll up their sleeves and learn to handle sewing machines, read patterns, and troubleshoot wardrobe malfunctions. During the Beginner Sewing/Pattern-Making class, teachers assign increasingly difficult projects, from stitching pajama bottoms to tailoring a snow hat, which students take home to augment their wardrobes. In the Fashion Illustration class, style-minded teachers unpack a thorough introduction to the industry, from a history of fashion to tips on building a portfolio to learning how to construct final designs while walking in platform stilettos. Recently added adult classes tailor lessons to novices in a six-week semester of evening sessions.
Arthur Murray Dance Studio has been a leading name in franchise dance since 1912, when the entrepreneur began selling mail-order dance lessons. Expanding his reach, he enlisted teachers to spread his signature dance lessons on first-class steamships and skyrocketed to fame in the '30s after introducing the public to such dances as the Lambeth Walk and the Big Apple. By the 1950s, Arthur and his wife, Kathryn, were hosting their own highly popular TV show on ABC, the Arthur Murray Dance Party, which ran for 12 years. Today, Arthur Murray's team prepares students for rug cutting at special events and weekend nightclub jaunts. Clients who arrive to lessons partnerless will be paired up with other classmates as the instructors assess their current skill level and make recommendations on the most appropriate program. Throughout lessons, instructors teach the foundations of two to four dances from a long list of styles that range from Latin to country-western, helping students to learn basic step patterns, timing, and the ability to lead or follow.
