When and how did you first develop a passion for your work?
The passion comes directly from our instructors' goal [of] making this gym not only competitive but different from the rest. John Crouch, one of the owners and instructors, started this gym with Joe and Ben Henderson to re-define jiu jitsu and muay thai and still include the much needed cardio and strength training people forget when training in the mixed-martial-arts realm.
I'm a first-timer. How do you get me ready for the experience?
Don't give up?it's a learning process and it won't be easy. It will feel like you are lost at first but everything takes time, and once you get the basics down, it gets easier and you start feeling amazing. My suggestion is to stick with it for a few months and really come consistently if you want to get the results you are looking for.
What is the one feature of your business that you're most proud of?
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Teachings come directly from John Crouch, a 30-year black belt who is one of the 9 people Royce Gracie ever gave a black belt to. ... Our members have become very competitive and compete at a lot of competitions around the world.... We have currently 8 members that train here that fight in the UFC, and we constantly have fighters from the UFC come from all over the world to train in our fight camps.
Is there anything else you want to add that we didn't cover?
Jarret Aki is our secret sauce trainer who directly works with the fighters and gets everyone conditioned. He ... modifies strength conditioning to each individual member's needs. Our workouts give you the one-on-one personal training attention in a class setting without the high-priced personal training fees.
A student of martial arts since 1974, Master Tim Elliott employs the skills he has acquired to help boys and girls build confidence, strength, and discipline. A supportive faculty of black belts and orange girdles call mini kickers to the mats from 9 a.m. to noon for introductory lessons in the Korean martial art of Tae Soo Do. The low student-to-teacher ratio of 6 to 1 ensures that trainees develop a reverent attitude toward their developing talents along with nuanced instruction in self-defense. Legs brace bodies as feet soar during standing, jumping, and spinning kicks; arms rocket forward in various grabs at undefended wrists and ice-cream cones. The camp concludes with a graduation ceremony and a certificate to celebrate each student's increased flexibility, confidence, and passing resemblance to Jean Claude van Damme.
Jacqui Bergmann had a lot to contend with—a divorce, depression, and a two-packs-a-day smoking habit. As she drove her son to the gym, she wondered what she should do to turn her life around. As it turns out, the answer was at the gym. Watching her son take a boxing lesson, Jacqui decided she wanted to give it a try. She traded her cigarettes for boxing gloves and felt her negative thoughts fade away to be replaced by a sense of confidence and empowerment.
Today, as owner of Glove Game Boxing, Jacqui gives guests this same feeling of empowerment through 30- and 60-minute boxing classes. Her team of trainers holds group and one-on-one lessons for men and women of all ability levels and goals, whether they just want to get in shape or to compete in amateur or professional circuits. They teach the same exercises used to drill the gym's pro pugilists—students learn about punching combinations, for example, and the importance of throwing at the X on King Hippo's stomach. The trainers emphasize proper form and technique so participants get the most out of each workout while minimizing the chance of injury. They also offer special training packages, including parent-child, postbaby, and wedding-day-countdown boot camps. To keep clients focused on the training and not the paperwork, Jacqui forgoes things such as long-term contracts and membership fees.
LA Boxing offers fitness classes in boxing, kickboxing, and mixed martial arts. The proprietary style of the LA Boxing workout is a mixture of genuine fight training, engaging fitness, and stronger-than-earth gravity. Quasi-boxers and martial artists may burn from 800 to more than 1,000 calories during these total-body routines, which combine external inspiration with jukes, jabs, and kicks. Both men and women are welcome in the ring, where they'll learn new techniques and methods to blissfully break into a sweat in an energetic group setting. Gloves are provided during the one-month trial membership, as are a set of reusable pro-quality hand wraps and complimentary motivational mumbling from Burgess Meredith (all three subject to availability).
The very first ATA Martial Arts opened in 1987, its 25 years of existence encapsulating the training of multiple generations of martial artists. Students trained, grew, had children of their own, and enrolled their kids at the same martial arts school they enjoyed as youths. The program of classes grew and evolved as well, starting with a foundation in taekwondo and growing to incorporate other styles and mixed martial arts training. The teachers now tone bodies using renowned MMA fighter Matt Hughes? personal cage fitness regimen.
