Dolphin Fitness Clubs' forest of humming and clanking exercise equipment is overseen by knowledgeable staff who are eager to dole out instruction on playing nicely with the machines and to pass along workout tips. Professional cardio- and strength-training equipment, from top manufacturers such as Cybex, Streamline, and Hammer, abounds as the certified trainers lead clients through customized workouts that are supplemented by nutritional counseling. The trainers also conduct group fitness classes—such as Zumba—in their expansive studios. Hordes of flat-screens line the gym walls, regaling fitness-seekers with distractions in the form of TV shows and movies such as Babe, a pig in the city who overcame all odds to run his first marathon.

Instructor and Basic Ballroom Dance Studio cofounder Ilya Barmotin is no stranger to the arena of competitive dancing—Ilya’s trophy room houses awards from the World Cup, US Open, and South American Showdance. With a lifetime spent in slick-soled shoes, he’s also aware of the social and fitness benefits of choreographed body movement. That’s why his studio teaches social and competitive dancing to students of all ages and experience levels in group or private settings.

The facility’s two large floors and private dance areas host lessons in styles ranging from the Latin cha-cha and rumba to standards such as the waltz, tango, and foxtrot. Beyond the classroom, students hone their skills in weekly practice parties or by communicating through tap dance at their day jobs. Students also participate in regional, national, and international competitions. Those seeking their own trophy collections can attend Friday-night workshops. At these workshops, participants build their stamina and stretch their limbs while receiving expert instruction.

As Quilters Guild members and proprietors of Crafting on the Plaza with M&M, Marla and MaryAnn provide fellow quilters with top-shelf instruction and products. The three-hour basic quilting class places the fledgling patchworker behind a provided sewing machine or at one brought from home, where they learn the arts of cutting, sewing, and using thimbles for finger-puppet prop comedy. Students can bring their own fabric or purchase their materials from the extensive inventory of fabrics offered in the store. By the end of the class, quilters will have a 12”x12” block created using both the machine and hand-sewing techniques, which will launch them on their way to a full-size bedspread or a hand-quilted roll of paper towels. Classes are offered Monday, 1 p.m.–4 p.m., Tuesday 9 a.m.–12 p.m., and Saturday 10 a.m.–1 p.m. and 1 p.m.–4 p.m.

Since 1973, archers have lined up to hone their shots at the front of Victory Archers' 12 regulation-size lanes. The arrow-slingers who line up there aren’t just a random collection of archers––though the indoor range does hold open shooting on Wednesday nights––but a community of archers drawn from leagues, lessons, and a group of members who team up not only to shoot, but also to maintain the facility. The real-world results from the community-based lessons and sans-leotard practice sessions have been impressive, as evidenced by the 17-point buck and other wild trophies that have been felled by club members.
