Frances Kweller, an attorney, educator, and the entrepreneur behind Kweller Prep, was the first person in her immediate family to attend a top college--New York University?s Steinhardt School of Education--and graduate program--Hofstra University School of Law. Not surprisingly, this inspired her to open her tutoring and test-preparation center after she got her law degree in order to help other hardworking students achieve their own dreams. Now, many of the students who use Kweller's services have followed suit in being the first of their families to attend a top high school or college on scholarship.
Her education center's locations in Forest Hills, midtown Manhattan, and Los Angeles serve more than 1,500 families a year with everything from in-person and Skype tutoring to SAT and SHSAT prep courses, offering both one-on-one and small group services. Kweller Prep is staffed by an impressive cadre of 32 multilingual tutors, who have scored in the 99th percentile on a variety of state and national exams. The tutors also work with many adults, teaching them new technologies and helping them brush up on common job skills when they've been out of the workforce. They even coordinate college visits for students who want to attend schools such as Harvard, NYU, Princeton, and Yale, as well as graduate schools.
At more than 900 learning centers across the world, Sylvan Learning offers kids a leg up through personalized programs prescribed by an in-depth skills assessment. Students build on past lessons to learn progressively, and sessions may hone in on different disciplines, granting kids the confidence to interpret literature and the rhetorical skills needed to negotiate a later bedtime. The positive mindset of personable, invested instructors helps to inspire kids to greater academic feats, as does a prize program that rewards hard work with CDs and gift cards.
Creative Study Zone helps middle-school and high-school students develop an arsenal of academic skills. During standardized exam-prep courses, teachers lead lectures and conduct group exercises designed to improve test-taking strategies. Students also complete practice tests created by the College Board and review fundamental concepts in reading, writing, math, and spitball shooting. The center’s afterschool homework program helps students complete daily assignments while also providing motivational support, and private tutoring offers one-on-one instruction in a range of academic subjects.
ALOHA (Abacus Learning of Higher Arithmetic) is a mathematics tutoring program that was originally developed for Malaysian children. The program has more than 3,000 centers in countries such as India, Thailand, Philippines, China, Australia, New Zealand, Oman, and UAE, and it was introduced to the United States in 2006. It also offers tutoring in reading and writing.
Since taking on its first student more than 15 years ago, Premier Education Center has helped more than 900 people win admission to exclusive high-schools and Ivy League colleges.
