The staff at Nova New York knows people often have reasons not to go to the gym—whether it's a need for childcare or a dislike of most gyms' typical offerings—and hopes to eliminate them. Since the studio opened in the spring of 2013, it has become a place for the community to come work out and learn about health. Childcare is available onsite and certified instructors help students find inner balance through exercise classes, continuing education, and children's programming. When students aren't stretching in a Vinyasa fusion yoga class they can shimmy through a salsa dance session or conquer new challenges in a body toning and conditioning class. Boot camp and personal training round out the options for adults, and kids get their own yoga and Zumba classes.
Ania Lesniak discovered yoga when she moved to New York City from her mountain village in Poland. Discovering the tranquil, centering poses of yoga—and soon, the brisk creativity of salsa and capoeira—taught Ania to use physical movement as a means to center herself and regain the calm and closeness to nature she left behind. These newfound passions led her to take over the preexisting Daya Yoga Studio and, with the help of a few passionate instructors, enrich the surrounding community with a variety of movement-based courses, including some taught in her native Polish tongue.
Today, the studio teems with activity. Instructors lead classes in a panoply of styles such as Vinyasa flow, which helps to strengthen muscles through movement from one pose to another in time with the class’s breathing. They also amp up heart rates with energetic Zumba classes and honor tradition by leading acrobatic capoeira, the Brazilian style of dance-fighting.
The instructors at Curves Studio lead fitness classes designed to disguise workouts with fun. They lead Latin-dance-based Zumba classes to upbeat music along with Be Moved sessions. They also offer yoga and Pilates classes for more traditional muscle-building workouts.
Maspeth Kickboxing crafts results-oriented workouts that push athletes to their limit so they can achieve their fitness goals. Workouts blend cardio vascular, strength, endurance, and flexibility training so clients can lose weight, get toned, and get stronger. In addition, Maspeth Kickboxing offers kids tae kwon do classes aimed at teaching youngsters the basics, while focusing on respect, discipline, and listening skills.
The martial art of taekwondo, a highlight of the Olympics since the year 2000, isn't just about flashy roundhouse kicks. Known by some as "the way of the foot and the hand," it combines combat and self-defense strategies with potent physical and disciplinary exercises that develop the strength necessary to kick through bricks, and the stamina needed to carefully piece them back together again. Fancy footwork is the forte of Blackbelt Taekwondo Center's head instructor, who in addition to his martial arts mastery has also taught dance since 1987. In classes geared for ages 4 and up, he instills students with confidence and energy to climb the belt ladder from white to black as they perfect taekwondo's physical buffet of rapid attacks.
Master Victor Ying—head of NY Self-Defense & Fitness—and his team of instructors truly train students to improve body and mind. In addition to hosting classes that draw techniques and philosophies from various martial arts styles—such as tai chi, brazilian jujitsu, and Tae Kwon Do—the staff also teaches students how to play everything from chess to the piano and the guitar, and instructors can even help with homework. This guidance in physical as well as intellectual pursuits helps visitors become more well-rounded individuals while developing invaluable, lifelong skills. To round out the studio's repertoire, the instructors also lead calorie-incinerating Zumba classes for both kids and adults, ensuring that students stay active and have fun.
