For more than three years, the artists at Ink House Studios have been decorating flesh with customized tattoos and piercings. Bold, bright floral designs, immaculate text, and traditional Japanese-style designs rendered in smooth gray and black are just a few specialties. Piercing specialists embellish bodies with gleaming jewelry or microdermal jewels.
Sam's Art & Framing preserves and stylishly showcases photos, prints, portraits, and memorabilia with expert care. Sam invokes more than 30 years framing experience to craft each frame by hand on the premises. Choose from thousands of molding and mat-board samples to enshrine a child's artwork or an overturned parking ticket. Framing options are virtually limitless, but as an example, about $70 can get you a 20"x24" frame with glass, backing and hanging hardware, and a basic diploma will run about $100.
With every cake and cookie that Jolei Desserts founder Jorge Tua makes, his ultimate goal is to match the culinary prowess of his former babysitter and baking guru, Nina. Eschewing classical training for life experience, Jorge built his bakery from the ground up and opened his hard-won labor of love in November 2011. Since that fall day, Jorge can be found bustling about his kitchen happily popping his dulcet confections into and out of ovens or cheerfully deploying his gift of gab upon customers in the front of the shop. Championing the cause of decadent eats made from scratch, Jorge vehemently shuns artificial flavors and preservatives for wholesome ingredients forged by nature rather than man or margarine-making elf. Along with his dedication to old-timey baking practices, Jorge, terrified of becoming known as the “boring neighborhood baker”, challenges himself to switch up his roster of baked goods daily to exercise his culinary creativity while supplying his regular crew of sweet-toothed patrons with sugary surprises each morning.
Once upon a time, a deserted stretch of Commerce Avenue may have been enough to make even the most unflinching New Yorker jumpy after dark. But today, something truly terrifying is lurking in the borough. Haunted-house vets Timothy Haskell, Bobby Ferrara, and Steve Kopelman have unleashed a horrifying host of zombies into this fog-filled, strobe-lit warehouse, where groups of willing victims must navigate each twist and turn if they hope to save their delicious brains. To make it through the 15- to 20-minute journey alive, guests must steady their nerves against loud noises, uneven footing, and tight spaces, as well as actors who may try to touch them or pass them a copy of their newest headshot.
The advocates of ocean-based travel at Above All Cruises unveil awe-inspiring views of New York City's sprawling skyline during weekly and holiday cruises that set sail out of Skyport Marina or World's Fair Marina. Rather than engaging in terra firma's exhausting recreational activities, such as hiking or the Running of the Taxis, visitors can while away the evening in one of three luxury ships: Lucille, Paddlewheel Queen, and Harbor Lights. Although each vessel flaunts its own personality and design, all three sport dance floors, flat-screen TVs, and hunger-quelling dinners. Experienced captains ensure that cruises always stay on course, and equally experienced DJs keep dance floors afloat with energetic songs.
Reflecting the diverse scope and scale of science itself, the exhibits at the New York Hall of Science range from massive NASA rockets to holographic depictions of the infinitesimal atom. Originally built for the 1964 World's Fair to showcase technological advancements, the center has since transformed into an interactive museum and leading innovator in exhibit technology and educational programming that, since 1986, has seen more than 7 million visitors. Today, more than 450 interactive exhibits, along with 3D movies and live daily demonstrations, invite visitors of all ages to explore the world by watching living microbes thrive and evolve in a miniscule zoo, discovering the powerful mathematics hidden in everyday objects, and testing their understanding of physics and Plutonian trash talk in the science playground, along with the mini-golf course inspired by the cosmos. The youngest visitors can also enjoy a developmentally-appropriate science education of their own in Preschool Place.
