As the morning or afternoon sun sparkles across the waters of Sheepshead Bay, Captain Joe Lind takes a deep breath of salty air and fires up the engines of his luxury catamaran, the Golden Sunshine. Though Lind's vessel can carry up to 350 passengers to private events on Rockaway Beach and the Jersey Coast, its spacious decks and cabins play host to smaller groups on fishing charters. During these trips, the Golden Sunshine's crew supplies prospective anglers with all of the equipment, tackle, and knowledge they need to reel in a hearty catch of fluke, which they promptly filet to ensure freshness. When they aren't scanning the azure waters for signs of fluke or Russian submarines, the crew leads tours to view fireworks celebrations and offers private charters on select evenings.

Captain Jeff and his mates pilot two vessels through the waters that lap New York’s varied shorelines, hunting fish the old-fashioned way—with rod and reel—on daily scheduled trips as well as private chartered voyages. This pair of ships forms the entirety of The Bullet Fleet, which provides deep-water excursions for salty dogs and newcomers alike. Onboard, passengers receive all the necessary gear and a modicum of instruction, as the crew takes a sink-or-swim approach to learning to fish, much like Sir Isaac Newton’s attempts to teach an apple to fly.

Mike Cannon fell in love young, and he fell in love hard. He was only 6 years old when he first stepped on board a fishing boat. For the next three years, his seasick father dutifully took him fishing every weekend, until one day, Mike told his dad that he didn?t need to come along. So it was at age 9 that Mike began his career as a bucket cleaner. At age 13, he became a deck hand for Capt. Mike Abbaticchio aboard the Capt. Mike, which he purchased for his own 16 years later. Today, he still commands the Capt. Mike, setting off into Jamaica Bay and the New York Bight with fishers of all experience levels for full- or half-day charters. Mike provides rods, bait, and tackle and doles out advice for catching winter flounders or avoiding direct eye contact with enraged striped bass.

The ember of Nick Coppola's fervor for fishing began years ago. While Nick studied biology in college, this passion bloomed into a full-blown vocation as he spent summers scouring the rivers of Southwest Montana. Since those early moments wading in the tides, Nick has become a New York State–licensed guide, continuing to catch trophy salmon, steelhead trout, brown trout, and runaway goldfish as the head of Slickwater Adventures.

Throughout two seasons each year, Coppola and his staff lead anglers of all levels into some of the East Coast's most picturesque habitats, including the Ausable River during summer months and the eastern Lake Ontario tributaries during winter. No matter the location, Coppola encourages participants to customize each adventure to their specific goals, whether they are honing existing skills, learning basic techniques, or luring in trophy catches with tricks and well-timed eyewinks.

Helmed by United States Coast Guard captains, Western Sound Charter’s premium boats can just as easily jaunt through Long Island Sound to the Statue of Liberty as they can wend their way along fishing routes replete with striped bass. The fleet encompasses six boat styles, which range from a 25-foot hardtop to a child-safe sightseeing and fishing vessel, whose floodlights can illuminate night expeditions and easily stand up to the bullying of pompous lighthouses. The company can accommodate parties of up to 100, and an advanced pairing service matches each client to an activity-appropriate boat.
