When it came time to name her business, Pamela Parisi looked to her own nickname: The Elegant Tightwad. She earned the moniker during 20 years spent in the fashion industry as a clothing designer, manufacturer, and mannequin guidance counselor. Parisi developed a reputation for her conflicting loves for designer clothes and fiscal responsibility. Always a problem solver, she quickly learned to marry her two passions by developing extensive knowledge of designer showrooms and the wholesale prices they charge. Today, she uses her nose for bargains to guide tour groups to the best deals on designer clothes and accessories. Her cash-saving tours have even garnered the attention of CNN and Elle magazine. In addition to her Garment District Diva tours, Parisi has also extended her expertise into the world of food. Her tasting excursions explore some of the most tempting eats in Hell's Kitchen, from Italian and Greek specialties to sweet treats from bakeries and ice cream shops.

The literature lovers at Writers & Books welcome readers to revel and mingle in costumes inspired by their favorite character at the store's annual masquerade. From 8 p.m. to midnight, partygoers of all ages can enjoy a ball with a literary twist that doesn't end in being turned back into a pumpkin carved in the likeness of Mr. Hyde. To prepare for the bash, party planners deck each room in the store—a historic former police precinct building—in the trappings of a genre such as horror, sci-fi, romance, fairytale, or mystery. In addition to macabre games and readings, the spooky soiree will feature raffles and a spirited costume contest. Attendees should bring cash for drinks, raffle tickets, and tipping the scurrying, disembodied hand that mixes the cocktails.
Gotham Writers' Workshop teaches more than 7,000 students every year how to tackle and tame the writing process in a creative learning environment. Professional writers help students to develop characters and generate ideas before a structured dialogue encourages classmates to comment on strengths and weakness, improving final drafts and abilities to stand up to playground bullies. Gotham also provides follow-up services and bolsters the communication skills of experienced writers, teenagers, and muffled mummies alike with private instruction and tips found in its book, Writing Movies.
At more than 900 learning centers across the world, Sylvan Learning offers kids a leg up through personalized programs prescribed by an in-depth skills assessment. Students build on past lessons to learn progressively, and sessions may hone in on different disciplines, granting kids the confidence to interpret literature and the rhetorical skills needed to negotiate a later bedtime. The positive mindset of personable, invested instructors helps to inspire kids to greater academic feats, as does a prize program that rewards hard work with CDs and gift cards.
