In 2001, Thane Hawkins, an avid outdoorsman with an acute case of wanderlust, found himself absconding from a lucrative career in the visual-effects industry to the Willamette Valley, where the area’s signature pinot noir inspired him to start handcrafting his own red wines. Relationships with regional growers soon followed, as did a job backing fellow winemaker Chris Lubberstedt, who encouraged Hawkins to conjure his own robust creations. Born from a passion for Rhone- and Bordeaux-style varietals, Hawkins’ 2009 syrah, pinot gris, and sangiovese wines have won gold and silver medals from the Newport Wine Competition.
An emphasis on honoring each wine’s true character anchors the cellar's philosophy, and Hawkins only uses fresh, plump grapes from northwestern vineyards. This unwavering devotion ensures swirls and sniffs in the winery’s brand-new tasting room yield distinctive aromas informed by each wine's individual terroir.
Drawing on grapes from nearly 900 acres of Northwestern vineyards in Oregon’s Willamette and Umpqua Valleys and Washington’s Wahluke Slope, Duck Pond Cellars staff have created a variety of award winning varietals. That list includes its silky and smooth Syrah, which won a silver medal from last year’s San Francisco International Wine Competition. Overseen by father-son duo Doug and Greg Fries, the team painstakingly crafts wines that visitors can sip on at the winery’s tasting room. As they enter the training circle at Curves, female guests come face-to-face with the smiles of other women. And just as points on a circle share a common distance from the circle's center, workout participants share the experiences of those nearby by trading stations throughout the 30-minute training session. One minute is spent on a piece of strength-training equipment built for feminine frames and designed to work two opposing muscle groups with a single movement. Exercisers then move on to a recovery station, where they run, jog, or dance to maintain heart rates and keep platforms in place during momentary losses of gravity.
