The expert trainers at Bodyshop Athletics X approach their fitness sessions as a dynamic, ever-changing science, and to that end, they constantly change up their routines and create full-body functional workouts. They lead intense boot camps, youth training for athletes aged 6 and older, and soccer-training camps.
Even before he founded PowerFit Bootcamp, JR Spear always felt a calling to transform people into fitness machines. A fourth-degree black belt and studied martial artist, Spear spent years training future Marine Corps officers and Iraqi soldiers in self-defense and combat skills. Later, Spear taught his own MMA fitness and cardio-kickboxing classes, along with personal and group training sessions. At PowerFit Bootcamp, he and his staff of fitness instructors encourage each student to persevere by leading motivational and high-energy classes. At 12 indoor and outdoor locations, students undergo full-body workouts designed to jettison fat and tone muscle. Trainers welcome students of all stripes, giving them a period of time to complete each move, rather than a number of repetitions, encouraging each student to do as much as he or she can without feeling uncomfortable, overexerting, or resorting to time travel. Along the way, coaches track progress and motivate students by noting benchmarks during physical fitness tests on the first Monday and Tuesday of each month.
9Round fitness centers eschew complicated machines or trendy aerobics for old-fashioned boxing and kickboxing circuits, which gym-goers complete in 30 minutes. With a focus on building strength, stamina, and core power, each circuit incorporates dumbbells, kettle bells, medicine balls, heavy bags, and jump ropes and is overseen by a trainer to keep clients motivated. The gym is open six days per week, and new rounds start every three minutes to accommodate a variety of schedules.
Dr. Edward Carpenter and his staff at Lexington Spinal Care are dedicated to their patients’ lifelong spinal care; in fact, they count everyone from infants to seniors as clients. They use noninvasive testing methods to inform a treatment path that may include spinal adjustments, nutritional support, and health-related classes wherein patients learn how to speak the spine’s language and command it to straighten itself up.
With more than 35 years of kid-entertaining experience, the friendly staff at The Little Gym provide a safe and fun locale where kids can stay active in a nurturing and non-competitive environment. Visiting youngsters glean skills and confidence while participating in hands-on activities that help enhance emotional, intellectual, and social skills. During classes full of physical activity, 4 to 12 year olds can learn to focus minds and bodies through the art of karate; 3 to 12 year olds learn to summon rain and showers of candy through dance. When four consecutive weeks of engaging exercises have left young ones yearning for more, the annual membership allows for eleven more months of exploration and growth. Gymnastics, sports skills, and parent/child classes for babies are also offered. Check the schedules for Columbia and Lexington for availability and call ahead for reservations.
