Located on the 250-acre grounds of historic Boscobel, overlooking the Hudson River, the Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival envelops theatergoers in worlds long past. Its inaugural production of A Midsummer Night's Dream in 1987 carved a path of critical acclaim for it to expand into summer-long festivals, ongoing educational outreach, and artist-in-residence programs. The organization's canon even extends past that of the Bard on occasion: past seasons have taken on The Three Musketeers and Tartuffe.

The oldest continuously operating theater in the state, Bardavon 1869 Opera House has carried forth a little piece of every era it thrived in. The domed ceiling and proscenium stage recall the 944-seat theater's opening as the Collingwood Opera House nearly 150 years ago. The Mighty Wurlitzer "Golden Voiced" pipe organ stretches back to 1928, to a time when the venue devoted itself to silent films. And despite the fact that it nearly succumbed to the wrecking ball in 1976, the stage has remained steadfast through the decades, becoming the one thing that performers such as Mark Twain, Frank Sinatra, and OK Go all have in common besides an enduring love of frisbee.

Massachusetts and New York metalheads get a sprawling double dose of tough and untamed hard rock as the Eat Your Heart Out Festival 2012 takes two states by storm in one marathon weekend. Touted as one of the “spring festivals worth attending” by Alternative Press, Eat Your Heart Out touts a buoyant lineup of international thrashers, with headlining performances from metallurgists Attack Attack! each night. The first day of the festival takes place at the three-stage live venue of Tuxedo Junction in Danbury, Massachusetts, where 14 hardcore metal and screamo acts such as Chunk! No, Captain Chunk!, Our Last Night, and That’s Outrageous blaze through merciless sets that shake eardrums for milk money.

SFJazz Collective's eight-maestro cast, known for its enthralling tributes to jazz masters such as Coltrane and Monk, immerses audiences in an aural carnival of funk as they tackle the soulful repertoire of Stevie Wonder. The crafty collective fuses their eclectic imaginations to Wonder’s wondrous Motown recordings, forging new adventures in sonic architecture with the talents of Grammy-nominated alto saxophonist Antonio Hart, acclaimed trumpeter Avishai Cohen, and rising star vibraphonist and Whac-A-Mole champion Stefon Harris. From funk institutions such as “Superstition” to the brassy barnstorm of “Sir Duke,” the band’s jazzy chops sweetens Stevie Wonder’s slinky syncopations like warm maple syrup drizzled on a hot stack of gold records.
