If anyone can legitimately claim being born to surf, it's Clint Carroll. His father is the legendary surfer Corky Carroll, widely considered a pioneer of the sport. Clint's immersion was immediate: he started surfing at the age of 2—on a surfboard shaped by his father, which now lives in the International Surf Museum—and started teaching just more than 10 years later.
The Clint Carroll Surf School, which came along in 2000, gives novices and experts alike the chance to improve their technique under the surfing master's tutelage. Clint conducts lessons in private, clinic, and group settings, accommodating surfers who need one-on-one attention as well as those who take to the sport so quickly an agent jumps onto their board by the end of the lesson. Regardless of lesson format, Clint equips each surfer with all necessary gear—board, wetsuit, and leash—so that all they need is the enthusiasm to tackle the waves.
From its waterfront perch on Newport Beach Pier, ABC Surf outfits patrons with the essentials for a fun day on the water. Wave riders can peruse the array of fiberglass and soft top surfboards for purchase or rent, while their spectators can snag a rental beach chair and umbrella. The shop is also an accredited NSSIA surf school, and provides lessons for everyone from beginners to experts, all of whom learn techniques for safely tackling each wave.
Ben Chen has experienced his share of success in his nearly 30-year photography career?his work has been published in such publications as Cosmopolitan, The Los Angeles Times, and ESPN Magazine, and he has lent his expertise to some of the nation's largest corporations, including Procter & Gamble and The American Red Cross. In 2006, the photographer began to notice that more and more novices were purchasing complex DSLR cameras, and that gave him an idea. Chen decided to share his wealth of knowledge with aspiring photographers by creating the 4-Hour Newbie Photography Boot Camp, which teaches students how to shoot manually with their DSLRs and create artistic, professional-quality photos. Since then, more than 5,000 students in 20 cities throughout the country have benefited from these classes. In 2013, he acquiesced to student demand and created Part II of the class, which goes beyond photography basics by diving into post-production techniques. Nowadays, students can take both Part I and Part II in the same day, helping them go from student to master in less time than most action-movie montages.
