Ocean State Rock Climbing's instructors guide climbers step-by-step as they progress from their first time on a wall until they tackle advanced problems. Initially, they put novices through a series of entry-level routes. As their climbers advance, they then teach them to belay and master more advanced skills such as lead climbing.
These journeys from beginner to master take place amid the towering walls of Ocean State Rock Climbing's gym. Secured by top ropes, rock climbers scale colorful routes and solve increasingly challenging problems. Crash pads create safe landings as visitors climb across bouldering routes or practice being trolls within two bouldering caves.
After putting their heads together back in 2005, sisters Lynn Grissom and Susan Bucci came to open the first Little Gym in Rhode Island. The concept was simple: positively impact kids by helping build confidence and self-esteem through noncompetitive, fun classes. The result was a curriculum-based program that got kids aged 4 months to 12 years active through a variety of classes. At the Smithfield location, instructors focus on "movement, music, learning, and laughter," during courses held six days a week.
Continuing the mission started in London more than 160 years ago, YMCA Smithfield provides quality, accessible fitness and wellness programs to families. My Gym Children's Fitness Center divides its classes into seven age groups, each based in the process of natural childhood development. Staff and instructors draw from current physiological, psychological, and sociological studies, as well as hands-on childcare experience, to design age-appropriate workouts that hone each age group's most vital skills. Classes accommodate children aged 6 weeks–8 years, focusing on skill sets ranging from visual and spatial exploration to gross-motor-skill development to structured games and gymnastics fundamentals. Eventually, this instruction leads up to full cardio and sports-focused classes for children up to 13 years of age, which keep kids fit enough to track and capture their own stuffed animals.
Koko FitClub’s automated personal-training system rockets both men and women toward fitness goals with 30-minute custom workouts that incorporate cardio and strength training. An initial consultation determines fitness levels and baseline measurements, which Koko’s computerized equipment uses to design a tailored workout plan that precisely measures the weight, pace, and rest time appropriate for each exerciser.
The Koko machines guide exercisers through each workout and adapt as the user’s fitness needs change in order to constantly challenge the body. Designed by professional trainers, workouts maximize the body’s lean-muscle mass, which can boost metabolism and help fight off disease by challenging viruses to kickboxing matches. Exercisers can track their shrinking waistlines and swelling muscles online by analyzing workout scores and comparing individual fitness levels to the Koko FitClub community.
