As spotlighted in the Daily Press, the confectionary skills of Bella Cakes' owner, Anna Lilly, bloomed in time to pull her family from the brink of bankruptcy. Now, with a booming business that was voted "Best of the 757" in 2013 by HamtptonRoadsMag.com, Lily leads a crew of bakers that swathes a weekly rotating cast of fluffy cakes in homemade buttercream icing and stuffs their cores with 12 creamy fillings, contributing a portion of weekly cupcake proceeds to charitable causes. In addition to freshly baked cookies, muffins, and bread, the boutique bakery specializes in wedding cakes whose dazzlingly detailed fondant exteriors and towering tiers provide ample cover for bouquet-hunting bridesmaids. Lilly also happily works with clients to design custom cakes and can even invent new flavors to suit particular palates.

Following handshakes, Stephanie Forbes Hudgins’s preferred greeting for new clients is inspections of their spines. The certified Pilates instructor conducts detailed alignment evaluations as part of introductory sessions, during which she studies new students’ postures, pinpoints their goals, and outlines their medical histories. The consultations enable her to personalize her future lessons—she is well versed in making her exercises easier to accommodate those who are injured, pregnant, or really full. Her studio's policy is one of universal acceptance: guests of every age and experience level are welcome.

The team of instructors' private, duet, and group lessons encompass the focused stretches and core-tightening holds of both classic and modern Pilates, aided by ample tools such as Reformers, chairs, balls, tubing, and TRX Suspension cords. Her staff's curriculum reaches beyond Pilates to include barre fitness and other disciplines. Zumba classes, for example, take visitors through festive cardio-dance routines, and sessions of assisted stretching release muscular tension while ensuring that you don't lunge too deeply and become permanently stuck.

With a police escort by his side, Dan Seachord strode across the Hampton University campus clutching the commission of a lifetime in his arms: a stately photograph of the Emancipation Oak, mounted and framed by Dan himself as the university's gift to the president of the United States. Whether designing fancy frames for diplomats or simpler ones for citizens, Dan and Carrie Seachord at The Great Frame Up customize frames for all manner of art, including pre-purchased pieces and images selected from the store's miniature gallery. Display cases and other enclosures capture a range of personal effects, from ticket stubs to three-dimensional keepsakes such as footballs and World's Best Mug mugs. The Great Frame Up also sends members of its design team on in-home and commercial consultations to ensure décor coordinates within offices and living spaces.
