Gary Poppins's popcorn proprietor draws upon the tongue-pleasing know-how he garnered at the Culinary Institute of America to outfit freshly burst kernels in classic coatings and creative flavors, dreaming up creations that have been praised by New York's Daily News and snatched from the shelves of specialty stores. The shop mixes up 24 different flavors, from traditional Chicago-style favorites such as cheddar to honey-mustard popcorn that combines stone-ground mustard and the tears of a dramatic queen bee. The shop also purveys roasted nuts, available plain or frosted with a blend of cinnamon, sugar, and vanilla that spreads its heavenly scent without the bitter taste of a pine-tree car air freshener.
Art makes a community thrive: so goes the philosophy at Brickton Art Center, where class instructors and art therapists aim to get people of all ages into the fun practice of dirtying up their hands and expressing themselves. The center's fine-art lessons cover a variety of media, helping students hone their technical skills while becoming creatively confident enough to draw caricatures of strangers. There are also fun-centric, one-time events held regularly, such as family workshops, BYOB painting nights ("Quench Your Palette"), and birthday parties.
The center is more than just a classroom: the confines regularly host charity and gallery events. There are also regular exhibitions, showing off the masterpieces of local artists.
Established around 1937, American Science & Surplus, a science-related hobby store, equips curious customers with gadgets that fulfill educational pursuits. For customers working on science experiments, the shop carries lab supplies and equipment such as burner stands, microscopes, and petri dishes. Tinkerers can pick up spare parts for their projects, such as power adapters or wheels to help with building model cars or turning TV remote controls into cat toys. The shop's inventory also includes robot parts, school and art supplies, and home accessories such as flexible chopping mats, cheeseburger-shaped kitchen timers, and desk toys.
Despite its rustic name, Liquor Barn purveys a wide array of sophisticated libations. Its shelves span continents with their stock—wines hail from Europe, South America, and Australia, and more than 2,000 domestic and imported beers appease hops aficionados. As for spirits, the store carries a mix of popular brands—Bacardi and Smirnoff among them—and exclusive collectibles, such as the cask-matured Auchentoshan 1975 limited-release bourbon, 1 of only 500 bottles ever produced. These coveted pieces display craftsmanship both inside and outside their containers. Tequila bottles, for example, might resemble painted skulls or ceramic cacti, instead of traditional flasks.
The staff facilitates purchases with onsite expertise. Each of the two Liquor Barn locations boasts specialists on certain types of drinks, from cognacs to craft beers. During social events, they showcase their know-how by leading pairing dinners, weekly free tastings, and cooking demonstrations along with special guests. Employees needn't be in the store to furnish parties, either: they can ferry drinks to nearby locales in a fleet of delivery trucks powered by popping champagne corks.
