Certified boxing coach Alden Washington was born into a family of boxers. His father, in between teaching boxing classes in the US Army and Navy, began coaching him in the pugilistic arts at the age of 10. Alden took to the sport, winning boxing titles in Silver and Golden Gloves competitions, all while earning his black belt in bando, Chinese kenpo, and tae kwon do. In 1980, the consummate athlete began coaching students, conducting classes in kickboxing as well as sprinting and sports conditioning.
At Washington Boxing Academy, Alden combines his extensive title-taking and teaching experience to conduct kickboxing classes for all ages. Amid the professional heavy bags and cushioned floors of his studio, the certified coach infuses kickboxing routines with rounds of creative exercises, including jumping rope, shadowboxing while holding weights, and slamming massive tires with hammers. In personal sessions, he spurs on advanced boxers as they spar in the studio's full-size boxing ring. He also provides students with fundamental self-defense tips, such as how to a catch an oncoming fist mid-punch or halt a flung pie midair.
The trainers at Competitive Edge Sports help aspiring athletes perfect every aspect of their game, from individual techniques to teamwork. In a 60,000 square foot facility made up of five courts, players sharpen their skills in full-sized basketball, volleyball, and futsal arenas, as well as a 6,000 square-foot training arena for practicing speed and agility. These spaces are used by students to train one-on-one or in small groups, compete in leagues and tournaments, and have races on Gatorade slip 'n slides.
Husband-and-wife duo James and Joyce Moore combine strength, cardio, and core training into a boot-camp program designed to eat away at unwanted bodily excess. A free body diagnostic jump-starts the boot-camp experience, as does the four-week meal plan, grocery list, and recipes that participants receive to give them the energy for their exercise routine and the strength to stand up to animate platters of cheese. A cardio-blast routine included in the package takes place at the end of the class and lasts 15 minutes, giving attendees an extra heart high-five before they leave. The Women's Empowerment Series itself is a suite of workshops and seminars focused on women's health, psychology, and professional development. With classes focused on pre-teen development, middle-age, and post-menopausal health, the series tackles every stage in a woman's life from birth to young adulthood to the chrysalis phase. Physical-health topics include specific workouts such as Zumba, Pilates, yoga, and tae bo, nutritional classes exploring vegan and raw foods and holistic health, and disease management. The programs also include a workshop for parents of children with concussions, a session on aging in America, and programs on dealing with finances and health after a loss.
