Founded by a professional player and made up of four fields, Route 40 Paintball Park is the perfect place to get serious about the sport. The referees kickoff every splatter session with a safety orientation to ensure everyone is playing fair and by the rules. Once the competition begins, the ref makes judgment calls when necessary. And players can look the part, too, by renting camouflage jumpsuits to help them better blend in while they duck behind barricades. Of course, the primary objective here is fun, so the facility welcomes first-time shooters, and encourages guests to bring snacks.

CBS Baltimore lauds Robinhood Paintball as one of the best paintball arenas near the city, but the year-round, 10-acre facility is actually eight arenas in one. Here, players clad in protective gear race around the airball field's bobbing inflatables, duck behind the wood-spool field's namesake spools or wrap their opponents in giant piles of unused thread. Elsewhere, they sneak through the tall trees and verdant brush of three wooded fields or storm the arena's towering castle. Thorough safety orientations prepare each player before they enter the facility, where referees keep watchful eyes over every game to ensure everyone's safety and compliance with the rules.

At North East Adventure Paintball, adventure is a family affair. Charles Narvel, his son Austin, and his nephew Shawn opened the 6.5-acre facility in May 2008 with the goal of providing a safe venue for exhilarating rounds of paintball. Before the grand opening, the trio parceled the acres into six themed fields and dotted each landscape with matching obstacles: Old Castle field has a stone fortress with multiple levels and a tower; Civil War field features simulated headquarters and trenches.

Today, players 9 or older sprint across the six fields in games of elimination, respawn, Alamo, sharpshooter, and capture the flag. Eco-friendly, oil-free paint splatters against protective gear as players duck behind shelters or leap over barriers. Lower-speed paintball guns are available for younger players whose reflexes have not evolved into cats just yet. After an adrenaline-fueled battle, players can eat food they've brought with them at shaded, sheltered picnic tables, or purchase food and drink at the concession stand. Party packages include a referee.

Hidden throughout the 6-acre corn maze at River Valley Ranch are nine map fragments. Using these clues, lucky visitors can find the hidden bridge to exit the maze, only to discover a whole host of fall-themed activities to get lost in. From hayrides and pony rides to a moon bounce and a classic pumpkin patch, Maizefest takes advantage of every aspect of the fall harvest. Adults and older kids can race each other towards victory in an inflatable obstacle course, while smaller kids have their own corny fun inside homemade corn boxes, that are kind of like sandboxes, but with more corn. Should all that fall-themed fun kindle an appetite, the ranch also offers snacks or full meals at the concession stand, with options including homemade chili, barbecue, and funnel cakes.

Sure Shot Paintball's squad of chromatic commandos outfits new recruits with rental equipment and sends them to do battle across 10 fields of glory. Each all-day pass includes an all-day field fee (a $20 value), 200 paintballs (a $10 value), and rental equipment, including a paintball gun, an air tank with unlimited gas refills, a mask, a barrel cover, and executive permission to wear a bandana (a $15 value). Brush-based battles occur in the Bear's Lair, featuring metal tubes that snake through large dirt mounds, providing high vantage points and ample spots for ambushes. The Assassin's Castle provides the backdrop for attack-and-defend games, centered around a compound that must be infiltrated to secure the flag and the kingdom's reserve of precious gold paint. Frenetic action can be found at the Air Ball Facility, a netted arena with inflatable cover that can convert from a 7-on-7 field into two 3-on-3 fields.
