What is the best reaction you’ve ever gotten from a client?
First client, as she was leaving the office, asked [the] second client coming in, "Do you have a massage scheduled with Gary?" Second client: "Yes". First client: "You're in for a treat."
How did you get started in the beauty industry? Did you have an "ah-ha" moment in life?
My wife was experiencing the effects of post-polio syndrome. After going for [reiki] treatments, she suggested that I have a session, too. I was amazed at how relaxed I felt. Our practitioner suggested that we learn it so we could provide it for each other, which we did. I was so taken by people's reactions after [they received] reiki that it led me to attend massage school on weekends for two years. I have been a licensed massage and bodywork therapist in North Carolina since 2006. Working with people on a personal level is far more rewarding than the work I did in the corporate world.
Is there anything else you want to add that we didn't cover?
Massage therapy is the work that I was meant to do.
Patrons at Elements Massage pair up with the therapist best qualified to address specific personal issues and concerns. Therapists then spend time with clients, gathering information about their conditions before customizing massages. During the massage, the therapists intuitively blend a variety of modalities, such as deep tissue, Swedish, and trigger-point therapy.
Throughout the process, the therapist keeps communication going. The team uses a system of levels by which clients can communicate the desired level of pressure; level 1 corresponds to long, light strokes over surficial muscles, and level 4 uses some force to root out embedded knots or get information from a balloon animal. Through this system, the therapist can get at all depths of tension while remaining well within the client’s comfort zone.
What began as a small venture—rubbing her dad’s back for a quarter as a child—has turned into a full-time career for massage therapist Laura. She joins fellow massage therapist Tara at Absolute Body Balance as they work out chronic aches and pains with Swedish-, deep-tissue-, prenatal-, and sports-massage techniques. They boost their massages’ benefits with hot stones, hot towels, and a cooling serum.
