Sensei Bobby Benner has been practicing martial arts in some form or another since childhood. A third-degree black belt in Matsubayashi-Ryu karate, Bobby extols mental discipline and physical fitness at Narragansett Bay Budokai, where he instructs kids, teens, and adults. Elsewhere in the studio, students can find cardio, boot-camp, and kickboxing classes, which help boost fitness, as well as Brazilian jujitsu sessions, which teach self-defense tactics to take down an attacker or stave off a particularly pushy used-car salesman.
Grandmaster Dennis Tosten founded the first Amerikick in 1967 and has since taught several champion fighters, police officers, and everyday students karate and self-defense. Today, the lauded chain teaches fitness classes inspired by martial arts, including cardio kickboxing in six states. Each location upholds a curriculum that blends Chinese and Japanese martial-arts styles—including kenpo and tae kwon do—with modern self-defense strategies, further updating traditional practices by eschewing uniforms and belts for casual workout gear. Having attained certification in teaching kickboxing from the National Association of Professional Martial Artists, Amerikick's seasoned instructors also each possess black belts in karate, a rank as difficult to attain as the snake charmer's belt of live cobras.
The seasoned trainers at Lion’s Den tone limbs and impart skills during a wide range of fighting and fitness classes. Learn the basics of mixed-martial-arts fighting in the Lion’s Den MMA class, as national grappling champion Rob Klezun and world Brazilian jujitsu champion Danilo Cherman cover timeless techniques, including basic boxing strikes, muay thai kicks, and brief levitation. Boxing Conditioning classes take students through a less fighterly workout regimen, as jabbers tone upper bodies in one-hour sessions that burn up to 1,000 calories. Consult Lion's Den's schedule for a host of noncombat workouts, including yoga, cardio kickboxing, and charades.
In 1990, Christina Rondeau fell in love. With martial arts, that is. After earning her black belt and competing in amateur karate and martial arts tournaments all over the United States and Europe, Rondeau decided to go pro. She travelled the globe as a member and coach on the USA WAKO kickboxing team, and went on to win the women's lightweight title. Rondeau continued to feed her athletic hunger with a switch to pro boxing and appeared in numerous print media and television shows, including The Maury Povich Show.
Having achieved fame and glory, Rondeau took on a new fight: she wanted to help women and children defend themselves while gaining indomitable confidence. She has authored books, created instructional DVDs, and opened Rondeau?s Kickboxing. The 24/7 gym garnered Rhode Island Monthly?s readers? pick for Best Fitness Center in 2010, due in no small part to its empowering blend of fitness and martial-arts-based classes. Rondeau also promotes safety in her community by participating in events geared towards ending violence toward women and girls and teaching local schoolchildren how to defend themselves or pass a math quiz without using weapons. She also coordinated a box-a-thon to help line the shelves of a Rhode Island food bank.
Although the top priority at Evolutionary Sports is to help others get into shape, the facility aims far beyond that by creating an environment that makes every guest, member, and first-time exerciser feel part of something bigger. To accomplish its mission, the business offers group workouts, personal training, and a full slate of classes at two different facilities. Those classes range from boot camp and yoga to karate and cross training, which fuses kickboxing techniques, cardio drills, and weight training into one intense session.
