Sprawling across 1,137 acres, the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum entices explorers with 12.5 miles of winding hiking trails and color-dappled garden paths displaying more than 5,000 dazzling plant specimens in their natural habitats. The steel-and-bronze sculptures of the Steelroots exhibition silently guard the path to the Maze Garden, twisting their curvilinear heft into evocative anthropomorphic angles that call to mind passionate love or celebratory end zone dances. Wander amid the 16 towering statues, created by Pennsylvania artist Steve Tobin as allegories for the entwined roots of modern communities, or join trained Arboretum guides as they thread guests through the facility’s lustrous forest on a one-hour guided Arboretum Highlights walking tour departing at 1 p.m. each day. Indoors, the Reedy Gallery celebrates the shadowy side of nature’s beauty with Here Comes the Sun, an exhibition of 26 sun-splashed landscapes, salt-sprayed ocean scenes, and syrup-drizzled pancake sculptures rendered by local and national artists.
At Green Lotus Yoga & Healing Center, instructors facilitate spiritual growth from the inside out. Yoga and mat Pilates classes can improve your strength and balance, while meditation sessions foster relaxation via breathing exercises. Inside intimate treatment rooms, practitioners administer a wide range of holistic healing services, including acupuncture, massage, and reiki. Founders Marcia Appel and Merry Beth Hovey also lead retreats, such as a recent trip to India, where students were able to deepen their studies and sharpen their agility by striking a tree pose atop the spires of the Taj Mahal.
In 2009, Kelly Larson and Jenn Holm turned what was once just an empty space in a strip mall into a serene yoga haven, replete with cushy cork flooring, soft lighting, and a modern sound system. Along with a team of certified yoga teachers, the duo strives to share yoga's physical and mental benefits with practitioners of all fitness levels, packing their schedule with classes suitable for beginners, advanced students, or children. They lead a variety of styles, including gentle Yin yoga, more advanced hot yoga, barre, and XY fitness.
Yoga 4 You is also the only studio in Minnesota licensed to teach Yoga Body Boot Camp—a total body regimen that fuses yoga and adrenaline-raising moves inspired by the popular shows The Biggest Loser and Survivor.
Uproarious cheers from the crowded stands compete with roaring engines zooming down Raceway Park's 1/4-mile banked asphalt track. Between April and September, weekly race events invite late-model, short-tracker, and mini stock cars to compete against one another in races that culminate in a final karaoke lap. Other festivities include Friday Night Destruction events, where motorcycles, trailers, and school buses put their axels to the test. Raceway Park also puts fans behind the wheels of real track cars during occasional racing-experience events.
