Extreme athletes banded together to design Spartan Races' intense courses orchestrated over standardized distances, each strewn with natural and man-made obstacles to test mind-body fitness, resilience, stamina, and strength, designed to leave participants exhausted and exhilarated. In waves of 200, runners collect smudges and stains as they perform box jumps, haul heavy sandbags, and juke feral linebackers. Depending on where in the world they're participating, the course may be as short as 3 miles or, for extremely practiced athletes, as long as a full marathon.

The mad scientists behind The Challenge Mud Run spend their days playing with mud and surfing the Web for the ideal throwing axe. All that hard work will pay off when they host an intense 5-mile race that challenges the mind and body. During the race, entrants crawl through a dark, semisubmerged and smoke-filled tunnel, swing on monkey bars over a quicksand pit, answer a series of brain teasers, and of course crawl through mud while pretending to be the primordial life form that preceded the crocodile.

The inspiring trainers at each MetaBody location lead troops of workouteers in results-oriented workouts several times weekly. Sweat sessions utilize a variety of exercises and disciplines to produce full-body results in a supportive environment, ideal for beginners and hard-core core-hardeners alike. During any class, motivational instructors will use the instinctual distrust of routine to their advantage. Begin a day of litigating with a refreshing early-morning boot-camp session, or wind down by burning evidence and pounds with a late-evening yoga class. Muscles are kept guessing with new and challenging moves during each session, so participants never fall into a boring, ineffective routine, such as regular teeth brushing. In addition to the fitness classes, students receive a success guide to help prepare for imminent pound loss, a nutrition guide, and a $100 gift certificate for individual coaching. Because the pass sets a 5 or 10-class cap at any given location, roving fitness mavens can further shake up their workout regimens by vetting a series of classes or instructors that work best for them.

Commando Athletics is more than just an intense name; founder Carlos Arias was actually in the military. But while deployed on a Special-Ops mission in Iraq, his helicopter crashed, leading to years of severe back pain. Luckily, he was able to recover after two years of rigorous core training. At Commando, he imparts the same discipline and routines that helped improve his health. Class sizes are kept small, resulting in individualized attention to students sweating their way through bootcamp sessions with kettlebells, resistance bands, and basic gymnastics. Pupils can sign up for a variety of programs to suit their respective skill levels, including a marine martial arts class taught by a man-sized G.I. Joe.

Your race. Your cause. That's the mantra behind My Charity Run, a 5K/10K that allows registrants to raise funds for whichever organization they choose. As long as the group is a registered nonprofit, runners can initiate a fundraising campaign for it upon signing up for the race. Though the hallmark of the event, fundraising is optional: runners without a specific charity in mind will have a portion of their registration fee donated to various local charities. To prep for the race, runners can follow 5K and 10K training programs on My Charity Run's Facebook and Twitter pages. The day of the run, participants are encouraged to wear clothing or uniforms that represent and promote their cause. The race will take place on the Hollywood Beach Boardwalk, and those who let the bucolic backdrop inspire them to cross the finish line will be rewarded with a completion medal, a souvenir T-shirt, and a goodie bag with swag from the sponsors. Awards will be handed out to the three fastest times and three highest fundraisers in each age group, as well as three overall spirit awards for those with great costumes, positive attitudes, and spirit animals with the quickest completion times.

Gábor Pásztor has always loved sports, his passion and athleticism leading him to compete in international track-and-field meets on behalf of his home country, Hungary. Today, he brings his speed, endurance, and coordination skills to the United States to help a new generation of soccer and track-and-field stars hone their natural abilities at Citius Athletic Club Miami. At his club, he helms US Soccer Federation–registered soccer teams in competitive play against other local organizations. And he's serious about the sport: He holds practice with four different age groups of students—ranging ages 3–13—three times a week. In addition to prepping youths for league play, he and his coaches lead fundamentals classes for beginning soccer players. The fundamentals classes cover the same skills and techniques as the competitive practices, but students aren't required to compete in games or maintain perfect pitch during the "National Anthem."
