With machines set up in rows to encourage competition, many ordinary gyms cater to men's bodies and psychology. At Curves, estrogen-touting exercise mavens move around a circuit of hydraulic resistance machines that have been designed to work with women's bodies and promote weight loss, protect against osteoporosis, and deal with arthritis. An experienced trainer is always nearby to help manage machine maneuvering and muscle making. Instead of fiddling with weight stacks and losing momentum, the hydraulic machines use body weight and fitness level to create resistance that matches abilities, decreasing the risk of soreness or injury. Because traditional lift-and-lower motions create bulky muscles, each machine uses push-and-pull motions to create toned, lean muscles perfect for crushing a grapefruit without looking like you can. The Curves Circuit with Zumba Fitness incorporates the Curves philosophy within the moves of Zumba, a Latin-inspired dance-fitness program that focuses on free-form movement instead of belligerently counting reps over the music.
As a practicing healthcare professional, Doctor of Chiropractic Elizabeth Welch noticed that an increasing number of her patients had bad posture, and she refused to believe that medication was the only solution. Through Postursizer, Inc. Dr. Welch has developed the Postursizer bar, a 5-in-1 exercise tool that can help correct postural problems—such as forward head posture, osteoporosis, and osteoarthritis—while also promoting total body fitness. By using thoraco-lumbar isometrics, the Postursizer bar helps to boost five key fitness areas: posture, flexibility, core, cardio, and bone density.

The fitness staff and certified personal trainers at O2 Fitness propel bodies through fitness classes and personal training in an upscale facility with more than 100 pieces of cardio equipment, brigades of strength machines, free weights, and an outdoor turf training area. Engaging instructors lead more than 50 group classes per week, such as BodyPump, yoga, and cycling, motivating students to shed calories and tone muscle. During two sessions, certified personal trainers impart exercisers efficient techniques that help to maximize workouts—such as staying awake—and tips on managing a proper diet. Slap soles against treadmills while watching the ceiling-mounted LED flat-panel televisions, and pamper muscles in the showers or saunas. For the duration of the 10 days, onsite childcare providers will watch over little ones, keeping them safe from flying free weights, clanging kettlebells, and yoga mats that swear loudly when stepped on.
At Lithe Core Pilates Studio, expert instructors lead classes designed to develop and stretch muscles. Taking place on rugged, 10K–12K courses across the country, the Green Beret Challenge gives participants the chance to demonstrate the legendary toughness and endurance of the race's namesakes. In teams of two or four, male, female, and coed crews all take a stab at glory. Armed with backpacks, lengths of rope, and sturdy D-rings, each team must prove its mental and physical tenacity by tackling a series of challenges that require participants to scale obstacles and carry heavy loads across mud, sand, and other surfaces. Every race is followed by a celebration, during which winners are awarded prizes and every of-age finisher receives a complimentary beer to quench thirst and complement endorphin highs.
