The coaching staff at North Shore Fencers Club has serious pedigree. The three coaches have more than 70 years of combined experience in the sport, marked by career highlights such as coaching the national teams of Russia, Belarus, and Estonia, and winning NCAA championships in 2010 and 2011. The sword-clinking coaches groom students as young as 7 to pursue the same level of success in the weapons of épée and foil—or, to at least improve their fitness, coordination, and confidence.
Lessons range from beginner classes for first-timers to private lessons for ambitious fencers looking to take their skills to the next level. More casual participants can also get in on the action through open fencing sessions and recreational camps.
Furnished with stately wood décor and a fireplace, Rein puts a regal twist on contemporary American cuisine via its appetizers and entrees. Dining-room architect and designer Robert DiLeonardo sets the sophisticated scene for a stage bill of well-seasoned stars, starting with charred sea scallops swimming in a succulent mix of wollfer's verjus, celery-root coulis, and citrus duck jus ($17). Entrees allow diners to graze with grace on plates of pepper-crusted, Montana-raised rib eyes ($48) or a lamb duo that entertains with an osso bucco-style shank and a breadcrumb-crusted rack that belts dulcet two-part flavor harmonies ($38). The herb-roasted free-range chicken and its entourage of creamed spinach, parsnips, and wild mushrooms ($29) roost alongside hot flushes of bamboo-steamed vegetables or smack-down potatoes ($7 each). Lounge post-meal with a fireside digestif, accompanied by a friend, loved one, or FDR's ghost.
Inplayables' inflatable wonderland includes slides, arenas, and bounce houses, where children can safely burn off pent-up energy while having fun. In addition to their open-play jump sessions, the staff summons princesses and cartoon characters for raucous, high-flying rock-star and princess birthday bashes that include themed activities. Other party packages reward energy-expending kids with pizza and activities, such as bubble blowing or face painting, all useful to take part in when preparing for a future in which every company is run by clowns.
